“I mean, come on, ladies. Don’t leave a guy in the lurch here, not when you’re talking such juicy details. Even Jaxson wouldn’t spill earlier.”

What did that mean?

“Oh?” Mia asked, unable to hold it in.

Brick’s grin widened. “He was sporting a nice size hickey.

“Was he now?”

Oh, shit. She gave him a hickey. She didn’t remember doing that or seeing one on his neck. Had she gotten that crazy? Her lips had a mind of their own. They explored and devoured him last night. They wanted to do it again tonight.

No, they didn’t. She was breaking up with him.

“Huge. Massive.” Brick lifted his hand, putting his fingers apart about two inches as if indicating it was that big.

Come. On.

She did not give him that big of a hickey. Although, she could feel her cheeks heating, giving away her dirty secret. Not that she was about to voice it out loud. Brick could infer what he wanted, but she’d never admit it.

“So?” he asked again, his eyes lingering on Jezebelle longer than her.

“A guy in the production,” Jezebelle blurted, her cheeks blooming a bright red.

Mia wanted to scream in frustration, but honestly, she had no right. She was just as bad. No matter how hard she tried to stop the crazy tendencies, she didn’t know how.

Brick’s smile fell, his shoulders slumping. A slight dangerous edge filtered into his eyes. Then someone from the other end of the counter shouted his name. He walked away without a word, or before Jezebelle could correct her lie. Not that Mia thought she actually would.

“I can’t believe you said that,” she whispered harshly, in case Brick overheard.

“I can’t believe I did either.” Jezebelle hung her head, then gulped half her drink. “I need another Tequila Sunrise. I didn’t get enough vitamin C yet. I still feel under the weather.”

“Girl, you and me both.”

Then they clinked glasses and drained both drinks.

It was going to be a long afternoon, and Mia didn’t care what happened. She planned to get piss-ass drunk. Screw her two-to-three limit. Today called for more.

Because then maybe she wouldn’t screw up her life and break up with Jaxson. She didn’t want to.

After having a shitty day finding no leads on the murder case, Gabby ignoring him most of the day—she could hold a grudge a long time—the crazy fight with his brother, and worrying about Mia, Jaxson was ready to leave and turn the night into a good one. He never set an exact time with Mia, but it didn’t matter. He would head to her apartment.

Maybe he should call first.

No, she might cancel.

Why did this have to be so complicated? He loved her. She loved him. They had the most magical night last night. Hell, he had the marks to prove it. What was she so scared of? She wouldn’t lose him.

Yeah, he understood he worked a dangerous job at times, but life was never guaranteed, no matter what a person did for a living. A person could be killed on their way home by a car accident. Someone could choke while eating. A heart attack could appear out of nowhere. Hell, lightning could strike and kill you. So many things could take a person away. That didn’t mean you stopped living.

Life was precious. It was meant to be lived to the fullest extent, each moment, each second, of every single day. Jaxson only had to find a way for Mia to believe this. He knew he had an uphill battle, considering everything she had gone through as a teenager. Losing her mom to cancer, then dealing with her dad’s horrific death. Although Jaxson knew she was better off without that devil in her life.

He waved to a few people as he exited the precinct. Gabby didn’t even look up from her desk as he said good-bye. She offered a short smile that he knew was for show. But for who? Everyone knew she was pissed at him.

Hopefully, when she found out the truth that he’d forgotten to tell her about the robbery was because he had been with Mia all night. Of course, there was the possibility she’d be pissed at him for hiding the truth about his relationship with Mia—short as it was.

As he slid into his car, his phone pinged with a message.
