Brick: Yo, you might want to come down to the bar. Mia is going to need a ride home soon.

What?

What was Mia doing at The Corner Bar already? And why in the hell would she need a ride home? Also, why was Brick texting him? Going to Gabby first seemed like the more logical thing to do.

Jaxson: What happened? Is she okay?

Brick: She’s drunk as a skunk. Besides the massive headache she’ll have tomorrow, she’s fine. Just get your ass here.

Okay. Very unexpected, but Jaxson didn’t need to be told twice, especially by Brick.

Jaxson made it to the bar a lot faster than he normally would’ve. He might’ve had a lead foot, swerving in and out of traffic. Gabby would’ve hollered his ear off at his erratic driving. But shit, it couldn’t be helped. Until he saw Mia with his own eyes, his racing heart wouldn’t calm down.

He found a spot not far from the entrance, surprisingly. Street parking was usually full. This filled his spirits. His night was finally going to turn toward the better.

When he opened the door to the bar, he heard Mia’s infectious laughter right away. She sat close to the door. Jezebelle—a performer at the theater Mia worked at—sat next to her, giggling away.

He sidled up to the bar next to Mia, smiling at the adorable way she used her hands vigorously as she relayed some funny story to Jezebelle. He didn’t say anything at first, even though he stood quite close to her.

It took her almost a minute to notice him.

“Jaxson!” A bright, beautiful smile lit up her features as she laid eyes on him. Then her eyes bulged. “Wow. Who gave you that huge hickey?”

Jaxson caught Brick’s eyes as he headed their way. Jaxson chuckled, trying to suppress a burst of full-blown laughter. Was she that drunk that she forgot she was the one who gave it to him? Or was she messing with him?

She winked. Double winked—or at least, it looked like it. Her facial expressions were a bit slower with the alcohol messing with her system.

But it was nice to know she was messing with him. Did she realize they were in a public place? That the secret she desperately wanted to keep hidden would be revealed if she kept it up?

He leaned in closer to her. “The most beautiful woman on earth did.”

Jaxson swore both Mia and Jezebelle sighed in flowery fashion at his words.

Brick stopped in front of them, his eyes widening as he subtly gestured at Mia. As if saying, “See what I mean now?” Jaxson lightly nodded.

“OMG, Brick, you were so right. That hickey is huge,” Mia said as she pressed her hands onto the bar with energy and leaned forward. “Huge!”

Brick nodded, meeting his gaze. Jaxson shrugged, praying inside he wasn’t blushing like a bright-red rose. But he could feel his face flaming with heat. He was failing miserably.

“Hey, Mia—”

“Sit, sit.” She patted the seat next to her, cutting him off before he could say they should leave.

If she didn’t leave now, she was bound to spill her secret. Not that he’d care at all. But for her sake—because he knew she’d regret her actions in the morning—he didn’t want that to happen. She needed to be sound of mind when she made the decision she wanted the whole world to know they were together.

“Sit.” She said it in such a commanding voice. Like last night when she told him to lay there and not move a muscle as she did the most delicious thing with her tongue all the way down his body. He listened like a golden retriever wanting his treat for doing all his tricks.

He sat.

Brick sighed, shaking his head, yet a whisper of a smile lingering. “Can I get you something to drink, Jaxson?”

“Water, dude. Just water.”

“Don’t be a fuddy-duddy.” Mia nudged him in the shoulder with hers, giggling.

He smiled wickedly at Brick. “With a lemon on the side.”

“So fancy,” Jezebelle said with a chuckle. Mia joined in.
