“Stuck in eighth grade when I snuck out to go to a party.” Jezebelle’s eyes widened. “I didn’t do that again after my parents found out.”

Mia could only laugh because she wasn’t about to share any childhood stories. She never did. Not even with Gabby, who knew all her stories anyway. But they never regaled their childhood. What was in the past, stayed in the past.

Grabbing a few paper towels, she dried her hands and then threw the towels away. Jezebelle bumped shoulders with her.

“Soooooo?” The wild smile on her face was very easy to decipher.

Mia chose to ignore it, matching her smile, though.

“Girl, don’t even with me. If you’re going to nag me about Brick, I’m going to do the same with Jaxson.”

She averted her eyes, her cheeks warming with heat. No matter how much alcohol flowed through her veins, it was still embarrassing to talk about him. Hell, her behavior out there had been ridiculous. She didn’t know how to stop herself. Words flew out, along with silly giggles. Before she knew it, she’d have her hands all over him, her lips close to follow. More hickeys would grace that man’s delicious body.

Except they weren’t telling anyone anything. Because she planned to break up with him. Make their one-day relationship null and void.

This bathroom break was the perfect distraction she needed to get her head back into focus. Into the right frame of mind.

“Mia?” Jezebelle said in a sing-song voice. And oh, she had a beautiful voice. Mia always loved watching her perform. She was a masterpiece to behold.

“It’s complicated.” Then she shrugged as she headed for the exit.

“Life’s complicated. That doesn’t mean you ignore what’s in front of you. You grab that shit by the balls and hang on for dear life. Don’t let it get away.”

She paused, her hand tightening its grip on the handle.

Was that what she was supposed to do? Hold on tightly and never let go?

She’d never done that before. The one time she had—with her mom—it didn’t end well.

Then Jezebelle’s words penetrated her mind as she repeated them a few times.

Turning toward her, a giggle escaped. “Grab that shit by the balls? Since when do you talk so vulgar?”

They both started to chuckle together again.

“I’m telling you, such powerful vitamin C in those drinks.”

“Well, you owe a quarter in the swear jar.”

She pulled open the door and headed out, Jezebelle’s laughter ringing in the air.

Jaxson was in the same spot, casually leaning his elbows on the bar, his eyes glued to the TV. The baseball game was on; it didn’t surprise her. The man loved baseball just as much as Gabby. Mia could take it or leave it. She’d rather watch the DIY network or a good homemaking show. Something to get her creative mind spinning with ideas. It always helped her. She’d grab her sketch pad and the ideas would just flow out of her like tap water on full blast.

Although he appeared to be intently watching the screen, as soon as they neared the bar, his gaze slid to her, as if his senses were tuned to her.

She sat down, as did Jezebelle, who pulled out her phone and started tapping away.

Jaxson leaned in closer, making her wish he’d close the distance and kiss her. But he didn’t. Because he respected her wishes. The man was perfect for her.

Why couldn’t she give in to her deep desires and love him unconditionally? Why did she have to play treacherous mind games with herself? It was exhausting.

“You look ready to go home.”

His eyes glittered with concern, but also with a hint of desire. Oh, yes. She’d let this man ravish her silly. Just like last night.

Then promptly tell him things were over between them.

Maybe.
