Hopefully.

If she found the strength to do so. It was for the best. Wasn’t it?

She glanced at his drink—with a silly lemon hanging on the side. With style, of course. Brick didn’t half-ass anything around here.

“You didn’t finish your drink.”

“It’s water. I’m okay not finishing it.”

Well, duh. She was grasping for straws and delaying the departure.

“Of course, I’m not going to make you leave if you don’t want to. You are here with your friend.”

She looked at Jezebelle who was still typing on her phone. Her face was drawn inward as if concentrating hard on texting whoever she was speaking to.

It was getting later in the evening. She had made plans with him to have supper at her place. While she had completely changed her entire afternoon, playing hooky with Jezebelle, she couldn’t be rude and cancel her plans with Jaxson.

But if she didn’t, she might make a huge mistake. Like call things off.

Maybe she needed one more drink to calm the nerves raging a war inside her.

“Oh, crap. I have to go, Mia. I hope you don’t mind.”

She met Jezebelle’s eyes, seeing the concern and a slight fright mingled within. Who had she been texting?

“Is everything okay?”

Jezebelle rolled her eyes. “Yeah, it’s all good. Something popped up and I have to deal with it.” She leaned closer. “Do very naughty, wicked things with that man next to you. Because you deserve it. Don’t make something you deem complicated even more complicated. Things are always pretty easy when you just let them be.”

That was the problem with her. She didn’t know how to do easy. Her life—since childhood—had always been complicated, with a capital C.

And it should all be so easy. So, so very easy.

Man loves woman.

Woman loves man.

The end.

Sounded easy enough.

When Mia didn’t respond, Jezebelle stood up with a knowing smile, hugged her, said a quick good-bye to Jaxson, and left.

“I could’ve given her a ride home.” Jaxson watched Jezebelle through the window as she walked down the sidewalk and then disappeared from their view.

That was the kind man he was. Jezebelle had declined his offer. One thing she knew about Jezebelle was when that woman made up her mind, it was difficult to change it. Sort of like her. Which was why they were such good friends, in and out of work. She didn’t hang with many people from work. Only a very select few.

“She’ll be fine.” Mia took a drink, finishing off her mimosa. She had lost count of how many she had, sprinkled in between the few shots they had to have.

Oh, she was going to have a killer headache tomorrow.

She could feel Jaxson’s heated gaze on her.

That headache sounded so far away. Pleasurable bliss was on the horizon. She had no intention of worrying about any painful headaches at the moment.

“Where’s Jezebelle?”

Mia turned toward Brick’s demanding voice. Maybe he hadn’t intended to sound so forceful, but it came out strong and clear. A bit of worry. A bit of shock. A bit of hurt. Because she left without saying good-bye.
