Then he swatted her ass and rolled out of bed.

“We do?”

“Yep. We both have off, and we both have a party to plan. I figured we do it together. It’ll be so much easier that way.”

Mia sat up, confused, although with a wisp of a smile on her face. “How do you know I have off? Are you stalking me?”

He bit his bottom lip as he grinned like the devil. “I know everything there is to know about you. No need to go the stalker route. But I also snooped in your planner and saw you have off today, so, yeah.”

Her mouth dropped open, shocked. He snooped in her stuff. Sure, he was a detective, naturally curious about things. But to go through her things…

Well, she couldn’t quite hold it against him when she thought about it. She would’ve done the same if she’d been alone in his apartment while he was passed out in bed.

“You look unsure whether you want to be mad at me or not. I’m going with not. I was honest about it. You’ll always get honesty with me.”

“And obviously no privacy,” she shot back, raising her brows.

His eyes shuttered for a brief moment as if hurt by her words. Shouldn’t she be the one offended and hurt?

“I’ll always respect you, Mia. Always. Your planner is sitting on the table. Yes, I opened to today’s date, but I didn’t search through the entire thing. I was kidding about snooping. I’m sorry.”

In all her time knowing Jaxson, she knew he was an honest, honorable man. Being friends and partners with Gabby for the past nine years, them being extremely close, made it very easy for Mia to get to know him as well. It’s why she fell in love with him. Because he knew every detail about her and hadn’t once treated her differently. To him, she was just Mia. Messed-up, fun, crazy, super shy at times, big crier at most things, Mia.

“Apology accepted. I’m not mad. I’d probably snoop at your place. You’ve been warned.”

A slow, wicked grin grew. “Received.”

Ugh. Damn it. She just insinuated they’d be having more interactions. That she’d be going over to his place. No, no, no. She had to break up with him.

“So, party planning commence? We have a lot to do.”

“What are you talking about? What party? For Dane?”

“Yes and no. You’re planning a party for Dane because Gabby asked you. Dane asked me if I’d plan Gabby’s birthday party. I figured we’d merge them together. It’d make it easier and a lot more fun.”

Mia shook her head. “Gabby already said she didn’t want to share a birthday party with Dane. She wants him to be the main focus.”

“And I’m telling you, Dane does not want that.”

“Neither does Gabby.”

He shrugged with a wicked look in his eyes. “Well, they asked us to plan the parties for them. That’s on them. Because it puts the decisions in our hands, and I say we merge the parties. Neither wants the spotlight on them. It’s going to happen either way. With one party, it won’t be as bad, spotlight-wise, that is.”

Mia giggled. “You totally don’t know what to do, do you? This is your way of getting me to plan the party you’re supposed to plan.”

“I mean, shit. What the hell was Dane thinking coming to me anyway?” Jaxson said, laughing, admitting every word she said was true. “I’m still thinking of an epic gift to get Gabby. I have to top what she gave me last year.”

Mia rolled her eyes as she laughed. Those two always outdid themselves. But she had faith Jaxson would pull out the best gift once again.

It always made her a bit jealous. Sure, he gave her a gift every year, as she did for his birthday. But he had never—not once—gone out of his way to get her an epic gift, as he called it, for her like he always did for Gabby. Not that she’d ever admit that to him, or Gabby, or anyone else. That was her little secret she’d keep.

Boy, she had way too many secrets going on. She really should stop that.

“Let’s talk about this while we have breakfast. You need food after last night. I’ll go make us something, if you want to grab a shower.” He headed for the doorway, pausing before exiting. “Damn, you’re so beautiful.”

Then he walked out.

Mia smiled, and then shivered. Glancing down, she realized that the entire time they chatted, she’d been sitting topless. How embarrassing. She grabbed the blanket and covered herself, even though he wasn’t in the room anymore. While she enjoyed dating and sex—a lot—she wouldn’t say she was adventurous in the bedroom. She liked low lighting. She liked normal, simple positions. She liked to keep the covers over her after having sex. Lying about, exposed, was too much for her. She wasn’t shy during the actual act, but afterward, oh, no. She either got dressed right away or pulled the covers over her. It felt like she was exposed—emotionally exposed—when she lay there with nothing but skin showing.
