“They’re fresh. Well, last night fresh. Peace offering. I’m sorry, okay. I meant to tell you about Mia and the robbery. I didn’t mean to not tell you.”

Gabby didn’t even look in his direction.

Not good.

Well, she was going to find out about his baking skills sooner or later. How about sooner.

“I made them myself. One of my better batches, if I do say so myself.”

That had her glancing at him, a brow arching.

And he wasn’t lying either. One of the best batches of cookies he’d made. The fact Mia had been there, adding her beauty and laughter to the atmosphere, made him want to produce the best cookies in the world. Just for her.

“You made these?” She pointed at the container, her brow still cocked in disbelief.

He nodded. “I…” He swallowed, suddenly filled with a bit of apprehension. Nope. No fear. He had to say it. “I make all the treats I bring to the station.”

Full-blown laughter filtered his way. “No way in hell.”

“Quarter.”

He couldn’t help himself, pointing out her swearing, even if she was pissed at him. She did say to always keep her accountable. Just doing his job as one of her best friends.

She pulled a quarter from the top drawer of her desk and plopped it into the jar sitting on the left-hand corner. It was already halfway filled. As soon as it reached the top, the entire squad would get pizza from Big Bennie’s Pizza Parlor from around the corner. It was always a treat for them. They made the best pizza in the city.

“More lies are not helping your case.”

“It’s not a lie. I make them. All the treats. Try a cookie.”

She rolled her eyes. “Of course, they’re going to taste good. Everything always does when you bring them in. But if you baked all that stuff, I’d know. I’m your best friend.”

“It’s my one secret I’ve never told anyone. I swear. I also swear I never meant to hold that information from you. Mia means a lot to me. I’d never do anything to hurt her or you like that.”

Gabby’s eyes fell to the container. “I know you wouldn’t. I guess I hoped deep down you two would get together. If you’re dating someone that means that’s not going to happen. I worry about her. Then the robbery…” She shook her head as if shaking off possible bad vibes and then opened the container.

He waited while she grabbed a cookie and took a bite. Pure bliss crossed her face like it had when Mia tried her first one. It always made him happy to see someone enjoy something he created.

“This is not cool.”

He frowned, confused. “What?”

She slapped her hand on the desk and laughed. “You hiding this talent. This shit is delicious. You will be making me more. As an apology.”

He laughed as well. “And then I’m forgiven?”

“I suppose.”

“Done.” Then he snapped his fingers and pointed at the swear jar. “Also, that’s another quarter.”

She stuck her tongue out, then pulled another quarter out.

He was about to inquire about the case they were working on and get caught up when his phone rang.

A quick glance had him hesitating.

“Who is it?”

He couldn’t hide his grimace. “My brother. We sort of had an argument two days ago.”
