“I don’t know much. He said he got into a fight with some guy, and they’re both sitting in a cell on assault charges. Look, I’m not looking for any special treatment. But I need help bailing him out. He’s sitting on a five thousand dollar bail. I have the money.”

Money he could’ve used toward a beautiful wedding for Mia. But hell, he’d figure something out. Mia deserved everything. Plus, his brother would pay him back. It was only a minor setback.

“I heard a rumor he talked to Hope. Her ex has been stirring up trouble in town. Obviously, the two just went head to head about it.”

“Ex? They’re divorced?”

Elliot laughed. “Never been married. But Tyrone has a jealous streak. I wouldn’t put it past him to say they’re married.”

Interesting. Mase had told him she had been married. What kind of story was he getting from this Hope woman? It would be better if he left her alone. Look where liking—no, loving—this woman already put him.

“I’ll head there myself and take care of it. See what happened and report back to you. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyrone started it all.”

“I appreciate it. I mean it. No special treatment. I will pay his bail. I’ll get the money to you ASAP.”

“Don’t worry about it, Jax. That’s what friends are for. I’ll get back to you soon.”

He hung up with Elliot, feeling somewhat better about the entire situation. He wouldn’t feel completely better until he spoke to his brother and knew with complete certainty he was done with this woman.

Gabby gave him the stink eye the entire time he walked back to his desk. It was impossible to look away from her.

“Am I privileged enough to know what any of that was about? Or just anotherphone call?” Her sarcasm was not lost on him. Of course, she was referring to the time Dane called him and finagled him into planning a birthday party.

He shook his head as a short smile filtered onto his face. Then he relayed everything.

“Poor Mase.”

“Poor Mase, my ass. He did it himself, messing with a married woman.”

Gabby cocked a brow. “Elliot said they weren’t married.”

“Okay, point taken. But something’s up if she did tell him that and she’s not married.”

“So, you’re not worried your brother got arrested?”

He ran a hand through his hair, sighing. “Of course, I’m worried.”

Gabby chuckled and stood up. “Come on. We have cases to solve, and you’re just confusing me right now. He’ll be fine. One day in jail isn’t going to kill him. If he did hook up with a crazy chick, hopefully, he’s learned his lesson.”

Seriously. Jaxson hoped so.

They headed out of the precinct to do more legwork on their latest murder case.

“So, dish? I want to hear all about this woman you hooked up with. I can’t handle the suspense any longer.”

Oh, man. He wanted to go back to dealing with his brother’s issues.

How could he keep lying to Gabby? It wasn’t right.

Yet, he wouldn’t betray Mia either. Not until she was ready to share the good news.

Or maybe he should tell Gabby. It would make it a lot harder for Mia to back out of the engagement.

Shit.

Forget his brother’s crazy issues. What in the hell didheget himself into?
