A low, nervous chuckle floated out. “Umm, no. I haven’t gotten one yet. It was a very spur-of-the-moment proposal. Doing things a little backwards here.”

“Well, the hard part is over,” the man said with laughter. “She said yes. Let’s find her the perfect ring. Do you know what kind of cut and shape she wants?”

“Umm…no.”

“Her favorite kind of gem? Not all women prefer diamonds for an engagement ring. Sometimes people buy rubies or emeralds, even sapphires.”

“Not sure.”

“How about her ring size?”

Wow. He was way in over his head here. He had no clue about any of this. Although, he knew Mia wore jewelry. She was always coordinating her outfits with different kinds of necklaces and bracelets. She was amazing at fitting the best jewelry with the perfect shirt or the prettiest dress.

But she only wore one ring that he knew of. A simple pearl ring that used to be her mother’s. He didn’t even recall her taking it off when she took a shower.

“Look, I know she loves jewelry, but she doesn’t wear a lot of rings. Just one. A simple pearl ring that her mother gave her. She wears it on her right hand. I’d like something that will fit well with that on her other hand.”

The man smiled.

“Come. This way. I have the perfect ring in mind.” His smile widened. “But it’s not cheap.”

When it came to Mia, price was not a concern.

She deserved the world.

Mia drewin a deep breath and let it out before opening the door to the party supply store. She saw Jaxson right away standing in the aisle filled with plates galore. Different styles. Different sizes. Different colors. Talk about making a decision. There were too many options.

After finally receiving a text from him, she had felt better inside that things were good between them. Of course, they were good. She didn’t even know why she had a mini internal panic attack. She let her emotions get the better of her. Like always.

“Hey, sorry I had to reschedule.”

Jaxson offered a weak smile, then leaned in and kissed her. The kiss helped her heart settle down, but it still pitter-pattered irregularly by the sadness in his features. She put that there.

“How did it go with Gabby? Have fun?”

Despite the awkward tension between them, her face beamed with excitement as she grabbed his arm and tugged like a little child getting a Christmas present early.

“She knows about the dress I’m making her and she loves it.”

His eyes flashed with hurt for a brief second, as if thinking she was going to tell him she told Gabby the truth about them. And she should’ve. She had no idea why she continued to keep this a secret. Her heart was telling her to shout it out to the world, yet her mind demanded she think it through and don’t be so hasty. Her mind always won. Even at times she didn’t want it to.

“That’s great. I knew she would.”

“I know you did. She wanted to show Dane the sketch and I told her absolutely not. He can’t see it until the wedding when she’s walking down the aisle.”

Jaxson grinned with her.

“Then she asked if she could at least show you and I said yes, of course. Just don’t act like you’ve seen it before, okay.”

His brows furrowed low as he took a step back. Like she had slapped him hard across the face. Her hand fell away from his arm. She missed the connection immediately. She already felt like she was barely hanging onto him, and now it’s like the small lifeline she had was ripped away.

Oh, the pain in his eyes killed her to her very soul.

“I won’t lie to her about that, Mia. I already don’t like lying to her about us. This is getting ridiculous.” His eyes narrowed. “I love you, damn it. What are you so afraid of?”

She had no answer for that. Not one that would make sense. It didn’t even make sense in her head. Every time he asked, it further cemented how messed up she was. That she couldn’t even make sense of her own feelings.
