Mase saw the ring box sitting on the counter and whistled low. “That is a pretty rock. Is Mia here? Am I about to interrupt something?”

“No, you missed the excitement of her departure. I’m pretty sure she dumped me. I bought it after our phone call.”

“Why’d she end things?”

“Partially my fault,” Brick said as he set a beer down in front of Mase. “On the house.”

Mase winked, picked up the bottle, and gestured in a cheers motion before taking a sip.

Well, it didn’t take a genius detective to know Mase had made a few phone calls to find him. Brick had told him.

“I told you, Brick, it wasn’t your fault.”

“So, what are you going to do now?” Mase asked as he twisted the bottle.

“Right now, have a few beers with my bro. I need details on this fight. Did you at least kick his ass good before the cuffs came on?”

“Way to change the subject,” Mase said with a laugh. “Oh, I kicked his ass.”

The slight cut on Mase’s lip said the other guy got a few good hits in as well. But Jaxson had no doubt Mase had the upper hand. He might not be in law enforcement like him, but he kept in shape. They could hold their own in a fight.

“So, tell me all about Hope.”

Mase eyed him critically for a moment.

“I want to like her. Give me something good about her. I swear the last thing I want to do is argue with you.”

“Okay. I don’t want that either.”

Brick held up his hand. “Hold the convo. I gotta handle this.” Then he headed down to the other end of the bar.

Jaxson laughed.

Mase cocked a brow. “He do that often?”

“He’s like a girl with his gossiping. You can’t keep anything from the guy.”

Jaxson grabbed his brother’s shoulder and squeezed affectionately. “I’m glad you came. I really am.”

“I’m glad you had my back. I appreciate it.”

“Always, man. Always.”

He might not know where his relationship with Mia was headed, but he knew things between his brother were good.

Life, for the moment, was good, despite what happened earlier.

The doorswung open and slammed harder than she intended.

“Hello?”

Whoops! There was a mixture of concern and surprise in Gabby’s voice as it filtered down the hallway. She hadn’t meant to be so dramatic in her entrance, except her emotions were all over the place and she couldn’t help it.

She entered the living room where Dane sat on the couch, slightly alert, whereas Gabby stood up, ready to tackle anything. Mia found it amusing Dane was willing to chill back and let Gabby handle whatever problem had walked through the door. Although he knew Gabby wouldn’t let him handle it no matter how hard he argued, considering she was the cop and he wasn’t.

“Why would you say hello? If I was a serial killer, I’m not going to respond. They never do.”
