Jaxson chuckled. “Someone needs fuel this morning. Long night of too much sex?” More laughter escaped, but this time a bit maniacal. Why would he ask such a question? He didn’t want to hear about Gabby’s sex life—ever. And he certainly didn’t want to think about sex, which would make him think about Mia and having sex with her.

“Scratch that question. I never asked it.”

Gabby’s melodic laughter lifted his spirits for about three seconds.

“I can do that. Sex was fantastic, though. Just saying.”

“La-la-la-la-laaaa. I did not hear that.” He wanted to sigh, but he held back because it would only put Gabby in detective mode to figure out what was wrong with him.

Normally, teasing with Gabby would make him happy. Put whatever frown he wore upside down. Not today.

“So, Cap gave me the next three days off. I’m sorry if I’m putting you on the lurch. It’s not intentional or anything, but—”

“I know. It’s okay, Jaxson. I know.”

Her voice dropped the cheerfulness and replaced it with understanding as if she did know. About Mia? Could she? Because if so, why wasn’t she mad at him for lying to her?

No, it couldn’t be that.

“Okay, cool. Brick must’ve told you. I knew you’d understand.”

“Yeah, I do.” She hesitated. “What are you doing today then? I can take off, too.”

“It’s okay. Mase and I might lounge around the apartment. We haven’t quite decided what we’re doing yet.”

“Mase…” She paused. “Right, Mase is in town. Of course, you’d want to spend time with your brother alone. Tell him I said hi.”

“Yep. I will. Call me if you need anything, though. That case we’re working on is—”

“Don’t worry about it. Enjoy your time with your brother.”

He hung up with Gabby, slightly confused as if they had both been talking about something else. Did she know about him and Mia? Was that what she originally meant?

There was no way he could ask her. Because if it wasn’t, then he would’ve been spilling the beans and he couldn’t do that to Mia. Not until he talked to her.

“When you going to tell Gabby about Mia?”

Jaxson didn’t respond right away. His eyes glossed over each channel as his brother flicked through each one with warp speed. Was he even processing what he was seeing? Did he have to go through each one three times before he decided on something? Like a weird tick or something? His brother could be very strange.

“Yo, dude? Gabby? Mia? You got nothing for me?”

He glanced at Mase. “I can’t say anything until I talk to Mia.”

“I’m pretty sure her silence is answer enough.”

“Thanks, Mase. Thanks a lot.”

Mase chuckled and slapped his shoulder and stood up. “Come on. Hoping and pining over our women is not going to help us. Let’s find a bar and get piss-ass drunk instead.”

“Yeah, because that’s not wallowing in our sorrows at all.”

“Sitting here isn’t going to help us either.”

Jaxson glanced at the coffee table where the list Mia had given him to invite people to the party sat. Something he still needed to do.

“Okay, you help me invite all these people to the party this Saturday, and then I’ll go to any bar you want to get piss-ass drunk.”

“Deal.”
