Mase grabbed his phone and started typing the first number on the list.

Well, if his brother could be enthusiastic about it, then so could he.

Tackling the list together, they managed to call everyone within two hours. On his own, it probably would’ve taken longer. Out of fifty people, thirty people answered, nineteen of which said they could make it. The other twenty people they left a message. The hard part was over. All that was left was to decorate on Saturday before the party and make sure Gabby and Dane didn’t find out.

Oh, and he needed to buy them a present.

And make the cake.

Not bad at all.

“You have that look like you’re about to renege on our deal,” Mase said with a short laugh.

“Slightly tweak it. Or we can put it on tomorrow’s to-do list. I need to get Dane a present and figure out something spectacular for Gabby.”

“How come Dane doesn’t get something spectacular?”

Jaxson knew Mase was kidding by the smirk on his face.

“Actually, when I was shopping for party supplies with Mia, I saw this cool looking painting that Dane would like. It would look great in his new office.”

“A painting?” Mase looked dubious about his great idea.

“Yeah, he’ll like it. Gabby is always talking about finding him the perfect pictures to hang in his office. Since he quit his old job and started up his own business, he has to redecorate everything. He didn’t want to take anything with him from his old place. Reminded him too much of his father. The painting I saw is a great depiction of the Empire State Building. It’s one of Dane’s favorite buildings.”

“His father? I saw his brother’s name was crossed out. You asked him already? What did he say? Are you inviting his father?”

Jaxson rolled his eyes. “I didn’t want to ask Champ, but I did. I didn’t stay to get a clear answer. I couldn’t care less if that asshole shows up. And his father.” Jaxson chuckled. “If Gabby wants him there, she can invite him. As far as I know, they still aren’t on talking terms since he quit.”

Mase nodded. “So, any ideas on Gabby yet?”

Jaxson sighed and dropped back to the couch, putting on a pouty face. “Not epic enough. They all suck. Mia’s inviting her friend who’s dating a baseball player from New York. There’s no way I can top that.”

“How about a baseball signed by Babe Ruth or something? That sounds epic.”

Jaxson scoffed. “Yeah, and will make me broke. I could never afford something like that. Try again.”

Mase laughed. “That’s the best idea I had.”

“Come on.” Jaxson stood up. “Let’s buy the painting, then hit up a bar. Maybe a bright idea will come to us there.” He cocked a brow. “Something under the thousand dollars range.”

He only heard Mase’s laughter as he walked out of the room to change.

Maybe while they were plying themselves with alcohol, he’d also come up with a great idea to win Mia’s heart back.

Just maybe.

Mia curledunder the blanket and tried to resist the urge to hide when Gabby walked into her view.

“Did you leave the door unlocked for me? Or someone else?” Gabby asked with a smirk as she plopped down on the couch next to her. “Girl, you don’t even look like you showered today. Did you go to work?”

Her, go to work when her heart was shattered into a million pieces? Umm, yeah, that didn’t happen. She had been a complete mess all day. After leaving Gabby’s last night, she thought she had felt better. On the verge of making the right decisions. Like telling Jaxson how much she loved him and how sorry she was for hurting him. That she wanted another chance.

Instead, she found herself calling out of work and watching sappy romance movies that made her feel like she was failing miserably in life. A few tears might’ve even been shed.

“I called out sick.”
