She wasn’t even going to answer the door question. Because she didn’t know the answer. Why would Jaxson come around when she didn’t even return his phone call or text? He had given up on her. She didn’t deserve anything but the misery she was living in.

“Yep, okay. I can’t stand this little pity party that’s going on here. It’s too much and just…bleh.” Gabby made a funny noise and stood up, grabbing Mia’s arm until she was forced to stand as well.

“Get your ass in the shower. Beautify yourself.”

Mia crossed her arms. “Why?”

“Because I said so.”

When Gabby displayed a fierce look like she’d wrestle her into the bathroom herself, Mia decided it wasn’t worth it to argue with her.

She had no reason to be acting like this. Her best friend finally knew the truth and wasn’t mad at her. A man she loved with all her heart—a good, perfect man—also loved her back.

Life was good.

Life was perfect.

Yet, she struggled to grab ahold of it with both hands and not let go. That nasty fear that had coiled around her since childhood still hung on by a thread. A fear so ingrained she wasn’t sure how it would ever snap and break free from her.

The shower helped wake her up some. Dressing in a cute purple blouse and a fun black skirt helped raise her mood. Adding a touch of makeup and dolling up her hair put the first smile on her face for the day.

“Much better. There’s my Mia I adore and love. Don’t you feel a little bit better?”

“I do.” She wound her arm through Gabby’s as they headed toward the kitchen where Gabby then grabbed two wine glasses she had already filled up. “Thank you. Just what I needed.”

“You know what I need?”

Mia took a small sip of wine instead of answering. She wasn’t sure she wanted to hear what Gabby needed. So selfish of her.

Of course, that didn’t deter Gabby.

“I need you to talk Jaxson. I know you haven’t yet.”

“How do you know?”

Gabby’s brow rose in disbelief. “You having a pity party on your couch was clue enough. Plus, I spoke to him earlier today. He doesn’t know I know about you two.”

Mia looked down at the counter. “I don’t know what to say.”

“Well, you have three days to figure it out.”

Her head popped up. “Three days? What’s happening in three days?”

Her heart started to pound. That tiny slice of fear started to rapidly build. Why such a short timeframe? Was he leaving? What was going on?

“His brother is in town for the next three days, which gives you a short reprieve from fixing things. Hell, I doubt Jaxson would mind if you popped in at his place today and told him you were sorry. But, if you’re unsure of what to say, then you have three days while he hangs out with his brother to think of something. I’ll help.”

“You should be massively pissed at me.”

Gabby shrugged and took a drink. “I admit, it hurts. But I get it, Mia. Certain things scare you and I get it. I’m not going to be mad about something like that. The past sucks. What happened with your dad sucks. I could use other choice words, but I’d be filling the swear jar to the rim and I don’t have that much money on me right now.”

Mia smiled despite the serious conversation they were having. Which, by the evidence on Gabby’s face, was what she had been trying to do—lift her spirits in any way she could.

“I know you’re trying to make me feel better, but I feel so…” Her hand traced the bottom of the wine glass, unsure of how to explain when she didn’t understand her own feelings.

“So lost.”

She just felt completely lost in her feelings.
