It hurt to even think about it.

“What details? Like we were wild and crazy around town or something? I’m not in college anymore, Gabs.”

Her laughter filled the air. “Like you were wild and crazy in college anyway. Cool and calm Jaxson. I don’t think so.”

“I had my moments. Parties were my forte. I could shotgun a can of beer in 6.7 seconds.”

Gabby cocked a brow. “Seriously?”

“You don’t believe me?”

She chuckled as she rearranged some papers on her desk. “I do, actually. I just can’t picture it. Maybe you can prove it at Dane’s party.”

He smiled, yet it was forced. If Gabby looked closely, she’d be able to tell it was forced.

The birthday party.

The epic birthday party.

Where the truth would come out. Maybe.

While he was finally talking to Mia—if one could call texting back and forth talking—they weren’t back together or anything. She had reached out about the party, and when she never mentioned anything else, he was too afraid to say anything either. She had contacted him. It brought joy, yet fear. One wrong move, one wrong word, and she could go radio silence again. He didn’t like that at all.

“Yeah, maybe.”

Gabby’s eyes narrowed. “So?”

This time a real smile, albeit short and small, appeared, along with a tiny chuckle. Leave it to her to keep pushing at him until he spilled the beans. Not that there was much to spill.

“We hung out. Ventured to a few bars. And no, no shotgunning occurred.” He laughed along with her. “It was nice to catch up with him.”

“It’s too bad he couldn’t stay for the party.”

Yeah, Jaxson was bummed he had to leave as well. Not that he wanted to avoid Gabby forever, but it was hard to keep the truth from her.

Hell, he wasn’t even sure if they were telling her the truth at the party. He assumed so since that’s what they’d originally agreed. What he did know was he didn’t want to lie to Gabby forever, even if the relationship didn’t last.

“Yeah, he had to get back to work and stuff.”

“And this woman? What are his plans there?”

He shrugged. He and Mase avoided talk about women. It hurt thinking about Mia, which Mase knew and never brought her up. Since he didn’t have many kind words about this Hope woman, he never broached that subject either.

“Not sure. But whatever he decides, I’ll support him on it. As long as he doesn’t get his ass arrested again.”

It was true. He might not like the woman—at the moment, he could always change his mind—it didn’t mean he wouldn’t support his brother. Always. No matter what. His family was everything to him.

“And Mia? What do you plan to do there?”

He jerked in his chair and then froze. What did she mean by that? Did she know? How long had she known?

Gabby’s expression softened. “I know everything, Jaxson.”

“You do?”

Holy. Shit. Was the first part of their conversation the calm before the storm? Was he about to see her true wrath for lying to her? Well, he deserved it. He had lied. No matter his reasons, he had lied.

“Mia came over the same night she walked out on you. She told me everything.”
