“Where is he? Is he here yet?”

Brick nodded toward the back room that was already blocked off for the party. “Getting stuff set up. Enter slowly so you don’t give him a heart attack.”

She giggled and slapped his forearm playfully. But the compliment made her feel good. It raised her confidence level a little higher.

Waving good-bye, she headed for the area blocked off with a thick, wide piece of red ribbon. Her idea. As if they planned to unveil a new building or something. Cutting the string with scissors and whooping for joy the party would begin. Silly, but fun.

As soon as she entered the room, she saw Jaxson by a white table, folding the popcorn containers and setting them up in a row.

She made it halfway to him when he must’ve sensed he wasn’t alone. He turned around.

His eyes melted with pleasure as his jaw dropped even lower than Brick’s had.

Her heart started to pound.

He didn’t say a word.

Every speech she practiced—because there had been many—was forgotten as they stared at each other.

This was going to be harder than she thought.

But it was the right time. The perfect time to let everything go and tell him how much she loved him.

There hadn’t been many times in his life when he was speechless.

Hearing his mom had a heart attack was one. That had been a hard phone call to have with his dad. Thankfully, she recovered and was doing great.

Listening to Gabby while she told the story about Mia’s dad and the disastrous results. What did a person say to that? Because he didn’t know what to say, he didn’t say much. Which, to Gabby, had been the right response.

And this. The beauty standing halfway across the room had him at a loss for words.

His mind tumbled between dropping to his knees and begging for another chance to shouting out how much he loved her and needed her in his life.

She took the hard decision away from him and spoke first.

“I’m sorry.”

Sorry? For what? That’s what made him nervous. Sorry for what she was about to do—end things completely?

She took a step toward him.

He was too afraid to move a muscle.

“I’m sorry for walking out on you last weekend. That was a shitty thing for me to do.”

“It hurt.”

Her expression fell. Not that he meant to hurt her feelings, but the words blurted out. Because it was true. Because he was sick of lying. Because he would never hold the truth from anyone ever again. Including Mia, even if it meant losing her.

“I know, and I don’t know how to take it back. I can’t. The only thing I can do is say sorry.” She took another step toward him.

Well, he wasn’t one to hold grudges.

“Apology accepted.” His eyes glided up and down once more because he couldn’t help himself. “You look absolutely gorgeous.”

She bit her bottom lip and smiled. The gesture turned him on, making his jeans—which made him think he was entirely underdressed compared to her—feel a little too tight.
