“It’s a new dress. For the party.”

“It was an excellent choice.”

She took two more steps, which put her in reaching distance. “It was also for you. Mostly for you, not the party.”

“For me?”

Was he dreaming? If he pinched himself, would he wake up from a glorious dream where the woman he loved was finally declaring her intentions?

One more step and he could smell the light, airy perfume she always wore. Not too overpowering, but a scent that enticed a man to come closer.

She tentatively reached out her hand and laid it on his chest. He could feel the slight tremble in her touch as if she was as nervous as him.

“I love you, Jaxson Brandt. I have for a very long time and was just too wrapped up in my own mind to see it. I am a mess. I have too much baggage that even I get overwhelmed to unpack it. But I love you and I want this to work. I’m hoping you still love me. I’m hoping that the marriage proposal is still good.”

Oh, he had to be dreaming. A sweet, decadent dream that would disappear as soon as he woke up. All week he had been suffering, thinking of her, trying to figure out what to do, what to say to make her see he was in it for the long haul. That he’d do anything for her.

This seemed too easy.

“Jaxson?” She bit her lip again, this time no smile hiding underneath it. Her hand trembled even more but didn’t move from its position. “Please say something. Anything? I screwed up too much, didn’t I?”

He covered her hand with his own, while his other hand wrapped around her neck, pulling her closer. “That marriage proposal was never even off the table for a second. I want you today, tomorrow, forever. In good times, and the bad. We’re all a mess at times. You’re my beautiful mess. I wouldn’t have you any other way.”

Then his lips found hers.

He heard and felt the sigh of relief as he nibbled on her lip as she had done herself.

This felt surreal, but he was thankful.

Thankful for second chances and that he didn’t have to fight anymore. It was hard to fight someone who was fighting themselves.

The kiss deepened. Their bodies moved closer. The temperature in the room turned hotter.

“Mia…” he whispered against her lips as one of her legs inched higher and tried to wrap around his waist.

Oh, yes. He wanted her. He needed her.

But shit. They were in a public room.

He broke away, unable to hide the deliriously happy smile on his face at her sad expression that they stopped.

“Not here.”

She bit down on her bottom lip again, the gesture way too enticing. Enough where he knew he couldn’t wait until tonight to have her. It had been a week too long without her.

This was crazy. They were in a bar. He wasn’t a rowdy teenager anymore.

But he had to have her.

“Follow me.”

Then he grabbed her hand, pulling her along slowly, yet with quick steps. He didn’t want to seem too eager and give away what they were about to do.

He pulled the key to the storage room Brick had given him out of his pocket and unlocked the door. They slipped inside the room before anyone noticed. Flipping the lights first, then the lock, he paused to stare at her.

“I’ve never done this before. Not like this.” A giddy giggle escaped as she looked around the room.

“Do you want to wait?”
