“Wait until she sees my engagement ring. That should lessen her anger.”

Jaxson grinned and grabbed her hand that wore that very ring. “Well, I kind of showed it to her already. But I’d like to hope she’ll be happy you’re wearing it.”

“She’ll be happy.” Mia winced as she traded a quick look with Gabby. The anger was still simmering below the surface. “She’ll be happy once she gets her frustrations out with us.”

“Should we do presents first? That might up her happiness a bit.”

Mia bumped shoulders with him and chuckled. “You’re just excited to give her your present to see her reaction. She’ll love it. I’m jealous.”

He turned, framing her face, and touched her lips with an aching gentleness. She sighed in contentment. How—no—why had she resisted this man for as long as she had? His kisses were divine. His touch magical. He made her feel loved and cherished without any words.

“Say the word and it’s done. I’d do anything for you.”

Her smile touched his lips before his tongue dove in and sealed the deal.

“Well, aren’t you two just two peas in a pod.”

They jumped apart at Dane’s voice. Although he hadn’t displayed much anger, apparently he hid his emotions better than Gabby. Or perhaps they weren’t as well versed in reading him as they were with Gabby.

Gabby stood next to him.

“While I’m happy to see this, what is this party? Because I don’t recall saying to add my birthday to it.”

“Yeah, I don’t recall it either.”

Gabby turned to Dane. “Meaning, what?”

Jaxson cleared his throat. “Dane asked me to help him throw a birthday party for you. You asked Mia to help throw one for Dane. We,” he said, pointing between him and Mia, “decided combining the parties would be perfect. You both don’t like the spotlight on you, so why not have one big party and boom! It’s done. The spotlight isn’t on one person, but you get to share it, so it’s not as bad. Plus, the baseball theme is pretty epic. Have you tried the hot dog stand yet? It’s delicious.”

Gabby glanced over at the food, and Mia could see her eyes salivating when she turned back toward them.

“Well, I will admit, I was not happy when I first saw the birthday banner and my name on it.”

“Really? I couldn’t tell,” Jaxson said with the right mixture of sarcasm that Gabby wouldn’t give him a huge tongue lashing.

“But, I have to say, what a great way to put you two together and see how perfect you are for each other. Let me see that ring.”

Gabby grabbed Mia’s hand and squealed in delight as if she had never seen the ring before.

“Oh my gosh, it looks so beautiful on your finger. I’m so happy for you two.”

Then Gabby narrowed her gaze.

“By the way, when did he give you this ring? The last time we talked, you hadn’t spoken to him.”

Before Mia could answer, Gabby focused her gaze on Jaxson. Like, really focused.

“Ho-ly. Shit! That hickey is by far bigger than the last one. Girl,” Gabby exclaimed as she slapped Mia playfully on the shoulder, “you can’t control yourself.”

Despite how embarrassing the conversation had turned, Mia couldn’t help but giggle.

Then she pointed to the table they had set up for presents and laughed. “We added a swear jar for you. You owe a quarter.”

“And you owe me a detailed description of everything.”

“Ew. Stop. Just stop.” Jaxson covered his ears as he groaned. “I will pretend you don’t want to hear about our sex life. It’s not that exciting.”

“The hickey says otherwise. Plus, Mia and I always talk about guys.”
