He pulled away, his hands still cupping her face, his gaze intense as he stared into her honey-glazed eyes.

“We’re still engaged. A ring is just a ring. I thought for a moment when you took it off that you wanted to stop…pretending.”

Oh, that word didn’t fit because the last four days hadn’t felt like they were pretending. Every moment, every blissful kiss, every time they came together in passion felt real and true.

“No. Never.”

Her whispered words floated between them like a sweet kiss.

Never.

Did that mean what he thought it meant?

“I love you. I meant that when I said it in the bar.”

There. He brought it out in the open. Perhaps she would’ve at some point, but he didn’t want to beat around the bush. Trust and communication were important to him. He always wanted it, especially with Jezebelle.

“I…” She licked her bottom lip.

The gesture enticed him to draw closer and give a little nibble himself, yet he held back. He waited for her to continue.

“It’s not too soon?” Her weak laugh did nothing to soothe his rattled nerves.

He wanted to hear the same words repeated to him, but he wouldn’t pressure her.

He dropped his hands from her face and interlocked them with her hands that had been resting on the counter. It was awkward sitting on the counter having such a serious conversation, but he was afraid to move.

“I’m pretty sure I’ve loved you since the moment I laid eyes on you. These last few days confirmed how I feel. I’m not saying this to pressure you into anything. This engagement doesn’t have to turn real.” His heart pounded. He could even feel his hands trembling. “But I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea if you wanted to make it real.”

“Engaged? For real?”

The shock in her voice didn’t settle his nerves at all.

He simply nodded.

She bit her bottom lip as a smile appeared.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to that idea either. I’m pretty sure I love you, too.”

“Pretty sure?” he asked with a chuckle. Ouch. He wasn’t sure whether to be elated or offended.

“Okay, a lot sure. This is all so fast and…yeah.”

He kissed her, hoping to soothe both of their shaky nerves. It worked to settle his to a point he knew he wouldn’t worry about them. She loved him. He’d take out those two silly words and simply say she loved him.

He squeezed her hands before hopping off the counter.

“Let’s celebrate.”

The warm smile that lit up her face had his cock jumping to attention. Down, boy. He had a few things he had to take care of first.

“I like the sound of that.”

“Good, but I hope you don’t mind if I leave you for a bit. I want to grab a few things and return the ring to my brother. The sooner, the better.”

She nodded. “Do you want me to go with? I don’t mind.”

He honestly wouldn’t mind that either, but he had some other things he needed to do as well without her around.

“No, it’s okay. You relax here. I won’t be more than an hour or two. I promise.”

He rounded the counter and pulled her into his arms, giving her a kiss filled with a heavy promise of more of that later.

“It’ll be worth the wait. Trust me.”

She smoothed a hand across his cheek, smiling. “Don’t be gone too long.”
