His hand drifted away as he nodded.

“Well, whatever is on the agenda, I don’t want you alone with Bradley.” His expression hardened to the point she could see him reliving the kiss Bradley had sprung on her.

She shivered at the memory. She had no problem keeping her distance from the man.

They ate in silence, more comfortable than she anticipated after the brief talk about her mother and Bradley. The beer didn’t taste bad at all—despite not liking beer in general—and by the time her food was gone, her head wasn’t pounding as hard as it had when she woke up.

Her phone rang from across the room where it sat on the nightstand. They both looked at it.

“Not going to answer?”

She looked at her phone for a moment longer, then turned to Brick. “She never listens to me when I tell her how I feel.”

His gaze displayed the understanding as if his father never listened to him either, yet he didn’t say anything. His silence was golden. People always felt like they had to respond when really, just listening helped.

“Maybe ignoring her will get her attention.”

His eyes brightened. “She won’t like that.”

But Jezebelle could tell he loved the idea.

“She doesn’t like anything I do anyway. What would make this any different?”

“What do you want to do then? On this beautiful, random day.”

She giggled. “Let’s get married and give her something to really steam about.”

The words shot out without thinking. Of course, she was teasing. This whole thing started as a fake engagement, turning into the real thing because they both happened to have feelings for each other. Getting married so quickly would be insane. They barely knew each other. They hadn’t even been on many dates, if she could call the last few days hanging out together official dates.

“I’m game.”

Her eyes widened. “I was kidding.”

He leaned closer, his elbows resting on the counter. “Well, I’m not. I know what I want and it’s being with you—forever. When I want something, I go for it. It’s that simple.”

“But it’s so quick.”

He stood up and shrugged. “It’s up to you. I love you, Jezebelle. I’ll wait for as long as you want, but I’m not opposed to getting hitched today. Let me jump in the shower and we can get started on the day with whatever it holds.”

His intense gaze said he was dead serious. He’d marry her today without any qualms whatsoever.

Married? Today?

Could they? Should they?

Her mother would blow a gasket. She might even disown her. Oh, and she had no doubt she’d have to pay her mother back every penny that she’d given her. But whatever. She’d do what she’d have to do to live her own life. She was done letting her mother control her.

She swiveled in her chair and looked toward the bathroom. The spray of the water sounded inviting, even though she had just taken a shower of her own. It was the thought of what stood under that spray.

Brick in all his glorious nakedness.

She headed for her destination before she changed her mind. This whole idea was out of this world. Beyond crazy. As bonkers as the fake engagement idea was.

The door opened to the bathroom and shut with a quiet click. Her clothes disappeared. Then she was opening the shower door, stepping inside, and wrapping her hands around his waist. She pressed her head to his back and sighed happily.

“Let’s get married. Today.”

His hands clasped hers and squeezed.
