He started to lift his hand to adjust the tie again but stopped midway when he saw Jaxson’s stern glare. A chuckle slipped out.

“I can’t help myself. I hate suits. I feel ridiculous wearing a tie.”

Jezebelle had made a call to Dominic this morning, who had dropped off a white suit jacket. When she asked why he didn’t bring black, Dominic had only smirked in that unique way he did and said, “Trust me. White is his color.” Damn if Dominic hadn’t been right. He wore white pants with a white shirt and a white jacket. The only thing that had been black was the tie. The jacket didn’t feel as restricting as the tie did.

Dane looked him up and down and nodded. “It doesn’t look like you. Take the tie off and unbutton the top button. Hell, I don’t imagine Jezebelle would even balk if you took the jacket off and rolled up your sleeves.”

“Nope. The jacket stays on.” Jaxson rolled his eyes. “But fine, you can take the tie off.”

Brick chuckled. “Gee, thanks, Dad.”

Jaxson grinned but didn’t say anything as Brick undid the tie and tossed it on the table. He already felt a thousand times better. He couldn’t explain it, but it had felt like a noose around his neck. Now it was like he could breathe free and clear and all would go right.

“I appreciate you calling in a favor and getting us in front of a judge on short notice.”

Jaxson nodded. “You owe me big. This judge can be a hardass in the courtroom, but he’s a sucker for a good love story. His daughter writes romance novels. He reads every one of them.”

That got a chuckle out of all three of them.

“Does he enjoy them?” Dane asked.

Jaxson tossed his shoulders up. “No clue, but he tells anyone and everyone she’s an author. He’s very proud of her.”

Dane stood up and put his phone in his pocket. “Let me check on the ladies. See how much longer this will take.”

Brick wasn’t sure if that’s because Dane was itching to get back to work, or for his benefit—to become a married man. Either way, he was dying to get it over with as well. He wanted Jezebelle as his, and with his last name attached to her, it would be official.

Well, assuming she took his last name. It wasn’t something he had asked. He could only hope she did, although it wouldn’t be a deal-breaker. He just wanted her as his wife. Now.

“I’m happy for you.” Jaxson clapped him on the shoulder. “Drinks on me later.”

More laughter escaped from him. “At my bar?”

“Of course. Where else would we celebrate?” The devious grin on Jaxson’s face was so comical that Brick laughed some more.

“Fine. I’m pulling out my best bottle of champagne. That shit isn’t cheap.”

Dane came back in and nodded with a triumphant smile as if he had lit a flame under the ladies’ butts to get it in gear.

“They’re ready.”

Brick blew out a breath, letting all the lingering tension release from his body. This was the right move. He wanted nothing more than Jezebelle in his life forever. It might’ve started as a ploy to get her mother off her back, but it had turned into the best damn thing to ever happen to him.

They all stepped out of the conference room they had taken over in the courthouse while the ladies had gotten together in a separate room.

“I’ll go see if the judge is ready for us.” Jaxson walked away down the long corridor to his right.

Brick turned to his left and couldn’t hold back his smile. Jezebelle stood with Mia and Gabby with her own beautiful smile, the happiness shining from her depths.

Yep, this was the right decision.

She wore a golden dress that looked like perfection. The sleeves coated her upper arms, leaving her shoulders bare and him imagining what was underneath. Definitely no bra as he didn’t see any straps. The dress didn’t hug her gorgeous curves he knew hid beneath the silky material but flowed around her with elegance. She radiated beauty, and he couldn’t believe how lucky he was. A shimmering gold nugget he had found buried beneath the rubble. His life wasn’t perfect, riddled with shit he liked to ignore, yet she brought out the goodness in it. She made his life richer.

He walked up to her and took her hand, lifting it to his lips.

“You are a rare gem, and I am the luckiest man alive.”

Her cheeks glowed red as her lips curved into a bright smile. “And you look like a knight in shining armor. White is your color. Dominic is so smart.”
