“Seriously, man. Talk to me.” Jaxson’s lips curled upwards slightly. “I’ll take a breakfast burrito while we chat.”

Brick shook his head, chuckling. “Where’s Gabby?”

“I thought I’d grab her one to-go. I’m meeting her at the precinct soon.”

Brick nodded and headed to the other end of the bar to tell Tamara to put in an order for four breakfast burritos. He knew Jaxson could scarf down two, and if he had two, Gabby would want two as well.

He took his time walking back to Jaxson, trying to formulate the right words. Where to start the conversation.

“I think Jezebelle wants a divorce.”

Jaxson’s brows rose. “You were just married yesterday.”

“Well, we didn’t wake up a blissful married couple.”

“Dude, marriage isn’t a walk in the park. It takes a lot of shit on both sides to make it work. Mia and I aren’t even married yet, but having a relationship takes a lot of work. If you’re throwing in the towel after one day, then it wasn’t meant to be.”

“I’m not.” Brick shoved a finger into his chest, frowning.

“What makes you think she wants one? She say so?”

“Well…no.”

Maybe this was a mistake.

She told him to stop putting words in her mouth, so he didn’t bother telling Jaxson what she said. She didn’t specifically say the words, but how else was he supposed to interpret that? He was a mistake was all he heard.

“The fight last night bother her?”

Brick nodded. “What was I supposed to do? Stand there and let that asshole hit my brother?”

“No. Hell, no.” Jaxson nodded in thanks at the glass of soda Brick placed in front of him and took a sip. “I’d jump in both fists swinging if someone took a shot at my brother Mase.”

“Exactly. Yet she made it seem like I did something wrong. She didn’t want me to meet her dad this morning sporting a black eye. That shit was already black and blue from my old man. It felt like she was telling me, no matter the reason, I can’t meet her dad looking like this.”

“Sorry, man.”

“I guess she’s pissed I’ve been arrested before, too. Something her dear mother told her.”

Jaxson’s brows rose. “I didn’t know that.”

Brick shrugged. “It’s nothing serious. I was a bit rowdy in my younger twenties. Got into a few bar fights. Which is why I didn’t mention what I’ve been arrested for this morning when she asked. She wasn’t happy about last night’s fight.”

Jaxson laughed. “Good call.”

“Her mother is still trying to ruin this thing between us. It feels like it’s starting to work. Now she’s meeting her father this morning and she didn’t want me with her. What am I supposed to think?”

“Honest truth?”

Well, he wouldn’t have asked if he didn’t want the brutal truth. Or even started this conversation if he didn’t want to hear what Jaxson had to say.

He jerked his head up and down once.

“I think you need to have faith and trust in her. That she’s not going to walk away just because her parents are making it a bit difficult. You started this thing with her five days ago as a fake engagement and now you’re married. That tells me that there is something real between you two. It’s strong and it can survive if you believe it can.”

Wow. Way to put him in his place. But he couldn’t discredit anything Jaxson was saying. It was all so true.

“I love her. I’m pretty damn sure I fell in love the moment I saw her walk into my bar.”
