When he didn’t say anything, Gabby continued. “I’ll have her address soon and Amelie back where she belongs and this woman in handcuffs.”

Corey shook his head. “You can’t arrest her.”

“Uh, she kidnapped your daughter,” Dane spit out, running his hands through his already disheveled hair.

“It’s also her daughter.”

“Who she abandoned,” Dane added.

Corey wouldn’t dispute that, but…hell, he didn’t know what he was thinking or should be thinking. He only wanted his daughter back.

Ricky cleared his throat.

Gabby held her defiant, stern stare until she finally conceded. “I didn’t want to worry you two, okay. I’m going to get her back. I’m so sorry this happened on our watch. I didn’t think to lock the door behind me.”

“Hey, it’s not your fault. It’s mine. I should’ve never left her alone.” Dane walked closer to Gabby and pulled her into his side.

“It’s neither of your guys’ fault. It’s mine. I didn’t take this woman seriously this morning. I didn’t think she’d do something like this.”

Although Corey had seen the determination in her eyes. She came for Amelie and nothing was going to stop her. Nothing did stop her.

“Enough of the blame game.” Ricky sighed and ran a tired hand down his face. “Call Jaxson again.”

“Bugging him isn’t going to speed up the process,” Gabby replied, although kept the annoyance out of her tone.

It might not, but it would make them feel better Corey figured.

Gabby’s phone rang a minute later and she answered with a “Give me all you got.”

Then her face crumbled. “You’re sure?”

Corey’s heart rate sped up once again.

“Double check.”

Gabby groaned.

“Well, triple check.”

Corey and Ricky shared a look, but he was forced to look away when he saw the pity in his brother’s eyes. He didn’t need that right now. Anything but that.

Why couldn’t anything go right today? And poor Amelie. Her teething. The pain she must be in. He applied some to her gums, but she might need more soon. Hell, he hadn’t checked how often he should apply it, he just applied it. He thought he’d look closer at the directions once they returned from their little stop. Did her mother even know what to do about it? She didn’t grab anything of Amelie’s. Only the blanket she had been laying on and that was it. No bottles. No formula. No car seat or her favorite stuffed teddy bear that made her giggle when he wiggled it in front of her talking silly and making funny sounds.

He could tell Gabby didn’t want to look at him when she ended the call. But she did because Gabby wasn’t a woman who backed down from anything. She went head-on to any problem like a raging bull going for the flapping red cloth dangling in front of its eyes.

“According to our records, Melanie Ramseth died a little over a month ago of an overdose.”

Corey stumbled back.

That was the last thing he expected to hear.

Died? A month ago? Overdose?

Then who the hell was that woman who ambushed him today?

Which was exactly the question that tore out of Ricky’s mouth before he could.

Gabby shrugged. “We’re not sure yet. Jaxson’s running the picture through our database to see if we come up with a match.”
