“Great. Now you can kindly leave.”

She swiveled back toward her brother, her eyes bulging at his continued rudeness.

“I said kindly leave.”

She rolled her eyes. Still rude.

“I got what I need, so I’ll leave.” Corey walked past her, glaring at her brother as he did.

The door swung open and she had to rush to it before Corey closed it without saying good-bye. He jerked when she grabbed the door. He stood in the hallway, with her poking her head outside the door. No need for her brother to hear anything.

“Umm…sorry about Oliver. And sorry about…everything.”

His eyes bore into hers for a moment, assessing, leveling a stare so hard, she wanted to look away.

“He’s looking out for you. I’d do the same if I had a sister.” He took a step away.

She leaned closer, trying to hold the door closed as much as possible. Oliver was bound to eavesdrop. Although, he had hearing like a hawk so she knew she wasn’t fooling him much.

“Thanks for, you know, coming to my rescue. You know, when you thought he was making me uncomfortable. I appreciate it.”

He cracked a grin for the briefest of moments. So quick, she could’ve imagined it. “I didn’t like how nervous you sounded. I’d’ve done it for anyone.”

Her heart deflated hearing that, but it was still nice he had. But of course, he was engaged, so it meant nothing. How silly of her.

“It sounds like you don’t want to do whatever he’s asking, so you shouldn’t have to. It doesn’t matter he’s your brother.”

“He’d never ask me to do anything dangerous.”

“A hooker dress?” Corey’s eyes narrowed, flashing with heat. “Sounds dangerous to me.”

“Right, well, I mean, it’s a tight dress. Shows too much cleavage and my ass…” her voice trailed off when the desire in his eyes increased. “It’s not a dress I wear often. I’m sure it’s nothing. Anyway, have a good night.”

He hesitated like he wanted to say something else. “You, too.”

He got two feet toward the stairs when she blurted, “Can I see Amelie sometime?”

The shock was evident in his gaze that she’d ask something so bold and brazen.

“I know it’s the last thing you want and I don’t deserve it.” Her bottom lip trembled, but she forced the sudden tears to stay away. “She’s my only lifeline to Melanie.”

His eyes narrowed, the anger filtering through the desire she had witnessed moments before.

“Forget it. It was stupid to ask.”

He sighed. “Supervised visits. Come by my apartment tomorrow after five.”

“Thank you, Corey.”

“Yeah, well, I appreciate you helping me today. Consider it my thanks. It doesn’t mean I trust you.”

Then he jaunted down the stairs before she could reply.

She shut the door and turned back toward her brother. “So tell me the plans before I get this dress on.”

He folded his arms as he leaned against her counter with his ankles already crossed. “First, you tell me what the hell all that was about.”
