He had a shitty-ass hand, but what the hell? That’s what bluffing was for.

“I call,” Dwayne said, throwing in a twenty over his. “It’s sex. It doesn’t have to be weird.”

Wrong. It would be much more than sex with her. It’d be…something he didn’t want to think about.

Sisco dropped his cards as did Todd.

He and Dwayne stared at each other.

“I raise it to fifty.”

Dwayne tossed in his money over his. “What you so afraid of? Meeting a nice woman for once.”

“You do remember what she did, right?”

Dwayne cocked a brow. “Something you’ve forgiven her for otherwise she wouldn’t be home alone with your daughter. She’s got a good job, a stable family. From what you didn’t say, she’s gorgeous as hell. I’ve never known you not to brag about how beautiful a woman is.”

He shoved all his money into the pot. All two hundred dollars left to his name for the week. “All in. So she’s gorgeous. Tight ass. Nice rack. Eyes that suck you in.” He burned to look away, embarrassed to admit the last part.

“See. I knew it.” Dwayne shoved his money into the pot as well. “Bang her already. Get it over with.”

“It’s not that simple.”

Dwayne laid his cards down, showing a three-of-a-kind. “It’s not that complicated. It’s sex. And you’re a shitty bluffer. If I see you want to sleep with her, she does, too.”

Shit.

He didn’t even bother showing them his cards, wanting to cry when Dwayne shoved all the money to his side with a sly smirk.

“Well, you cleaned me dry. I guess I should head home.”

“Baby’s in bed, you got time to love your woman.”

Corey stood up from the table, laughing at Dwayne. “First, she’s not my woman. Second, the crib is in my room. No sexy time for me.”

“Never known that to stop you,” Dwayne said with a snort.

“Did I forget to mention she has a boyfriend? Not stepping on another man’s territory.”

Dwayne nodded, as did the other guys. “Okay, fine. I’ll give you that. As soon as she’s not taken, jump her.”

Corey chuckled, not bothering to add anything more. At least they got off his back about her.

He said good-bye to his friends, promising them he’d make it to next month’s poker night. It had been a much-needed break. Like Genevieve had said, he deserved it. He was starting to believe it.

He took his time driving home. Not because he anticipated seeing Genevieve so soon and knew he shouldn’t, but because he wanted a few more minutes to himself before he had to put his dad cap back on.

When he opened his apartment door and shut it with a quiet click, eyeing Genevieve asleep on his couch, he knew he had been lying to himself.

He’d been dying to see her again. And wanting her with an ache that he knew wasn’t smart.

His keys hit his counter without a sound, not wanting to wake up Amelie. Hell, he wasn’t even ready to wake up Genevieve. She looked so peaceful curled up underneath a blanket on his couch. So relaxed. So beautiful the way her hair fell gracefully on the cushion.

He noticed she had cleaned up, appreciating the kind gesture. He hated doing dishes and he’d given up hope the landlord would get the dumb dishwasher fixed.

His apartment was a shabby place and it was high time he moved somewhere else. For Amelie’s sake. Closer to the bar would be best.

He’d add that to his to-do list. Alongside finding a new daycare that he didn’t want to do.
