Cold air rushed across his body, making him realize he’d rushed out of his room in nothing more than his boxers.

“Sorry. Did I wake you? I was trying to be super quiet.”

“No. Umm, yeah, maybe. I heard a noise. I didn’t mean to sleep so long.” He saw Amelie in her pack-n-play sitting up with the help from the pillow he had bought her.

Genevieve came around the counter, setting the dish towel down. He figured she was trying to be discreet about it but was failing miserably as her eyes glided up and down his body. Did she like what she saw? What would she do if he stepped closer and kissed her?

“I didn’t hear you get Amelie this morning.”

Her cheeks bloomed a light red. “Well, when I heard her crying and you didn’t come out to get a bottle, I peeked inside. You were out cold. I didn’t want to wake you, so I picked her up and fed her. I…I hope that was okay.”

“Yeah, of course. Thank you. I guess I was more tired than I thought I’d be. That’s never happened to me before.”

“I didn’t mind. She’s been an angel all morning.” She looked away, of course, not before checking him out again. “She was an angel last night, too. Such a good baby.”

“She is.”

Genevieve dared another glance his way, her cheeks burning even brighter. “Can I make you breakfast? Tea?”

“Tea?” He frowned, laughing. Then his eyes glanced at the teapot on his stove. Well, shit. She was making herself at home here.

For some reason, it didn’t bother him.

“Uh, not a tea fan. I’m good, but thanks. You probably need to get to work. I’m sorry. You could’ve woken me up.”

She shook her head. “I don’t have a class until one. But I can get out of your way. Thanks for letting me watch her.”

“Like I said, anytime.”

“Well, about that.” A tentative smile brushed across her pink, kissable lips.

Lips he was dying to touch, to caress, to find out how they tasted. The longer he stood here half-naked, the more he wanted to find out. The shy, obvious way she kept looking at him said she wanted him to move closer and do something about it.

“Yeah, about that?” he prompted when she didn’t say anything else.

She cleared her throat. “I mean, it’s a silly idea.”

He took two steps her way. Still a distance away, but he enjoyed the way her eyes lit up, the anticipation sparkling in her gaze.

“I’m dying to hear this silly idea.”

“You’re still looking for a daycare?”

He nodded, although it wasn’t exactly true. He told Ricky he’d look, but he hadn’t started yet. Finding another daycare was the last thing he wanted to do. He’d never trust any place he found.

“Well, I can watch her for you, if you want. There are a lot of night classes I can take instead of doing the morning ones. I know it was presumptuous of me, but I already chatted to a few co-workers and they don’t mind switching.”

He moved another three steps her way. “You’d do that for me. For us?”

Of course he meant him and Amelie. Yet the way her eyes flashed with an odd emotion he couldn’t quite describe, it was as if he was talking about them. Him and her.

“I mean, until you find another daycare. I’d love to.”

“I’m not sure I’ll ever trust another daycare.”

She nodded. “My job is flexible. And I love her like she is my own.” Her eyes watered. “When I’m with her, it’s like I can feel Melanie there, too.”

He didn’t want to talk about Melanie. Although, he knew that wasn’t possible. Melanie was a link between them that would never disappear. Amelie ensured that. Just thinking about Melanie had a tinge of anger toiling in his stomach.
