Nobody said anything for a beat.

Then Dane spoke first, surprisingly. “Actions speak louder than words. Some people make mistakes. I’m okay with it as long as Gabby is.”

Gabby leaned into Dane, kissing him. “I’m okay with it if you are.” Then she looked at Corey. “You sure you know what you’re doing.”

Hell, no, he had no idea what he was doing. Following his heart for once instead of his dick. That was new for him. New was always scary. But you didn’t get anywhere in life being scared of shit.

“She’s become important to me. I don’t know what else to say to make anybody understand. Hell, I don’t understand it half the time. Amelie loves her.”

I love her.

Although he didn’t say it, he sensed he wasn’t hiding his emotions as well as he wanted to.

“Well, she knows what I’ll do if she makes one wrong step.”

Corey laughed, though he sensed Gabby wasn’t joking.

He left the bar with his nerves running rampant. When he knocked on her door and she opened it with a beautiful smile, his nerves flew through the roof and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to ask her.

What if she said no?

“So we keep missing this pizza opportunity. I thought we might try tonight.” Her voice was clear, but the tentative look in her eyes said she was as nervous as him.

Good to know.

“I’d love pizza.”

“Great. I’ll call it in.”

She headed to the kitchen where her phone sat and he went to the living room and picked up Amelie.

“How were my girls today?”

Shit.

He did it again. By the silence from Genevieve, he knew it shocked her as much as him. He hadn’t meant for it to slip out like that. As if he could claim her as his. Soon, he hoped he could.

Of course, like the last time he screwed up, she glossed over it as if he never said it.

“She was an angel, as usual. Keeping me on my toes. I swear she’ll be walking soon.”

He let her order the pizza, hoping his heart would settle down and his nerves would get a hold of themselves.

Dinner went well. Conversation was smooth and everything was normal. Cartoons were on in the background for Amelie. When Genevieve offered him a beer, he didn’t say no. She had one herself.

“I read one of the books already. Hugh was a charmer. You were right.”

He laughed. “Well, with a name like Hugh, I had no doubt.”

She smiled and his cock twitched. Damn, he loved when she smiled.

He should do it. Get it over with. Ask her to the wedding. Potentially ruin everything between them.

Amelie squealed at the TV when the dancing bear singing the ABCs ended the song. That usually meant she wanted to see it again. He picked up the remote and started the episode over again.

“I swear I hear the ABCs and every other nursery rhyme in my dreams.” Genevieve’s laughter filled the room, along with his lonely heart.

He heardthatin his dreams. Her sweet, wonderful laughter. Pictured her lying next to him. Securely in his arms. Where she belonged. Where he wanted her to belong.
