Page 56 of The Hard Choice

“And I’m not attracted to her.” He sat up straight. “But shit, the way Rebecca was going at me last week like I wanted her, I might as well be attracted to her.”

“She’s never going to change. And you deserve better.” Then she hit delete and confirmed that’s what she wanted to do. She set his phone back on the nightstand.

He slumped against the headboard. “You know I know her number by heart, right?”

“You’re also a smart man and learn from your mistakes.” She thumbed through her dresses, trying to decide what one to try on next. There weren’t many to choose from.

“You’re smart, too. Are you sure this isn’t a mistake?”

Her hand tightened on the blue hooker dress. There was no way she could wear that one to the wedding.

“It’s not a big deal.”

“It’s a big deal, ‘Vieve.”

She let go of the blue dress and stopped on a green one. It fit her figure nicely. Didn’t show off too much cleavage and went a little past her knees. It was respectable and said she wasn’t looking for sex. Yet, she sort of hoped that happened soon between them. The sexual tension over the past week had been too much to handle. Handing off Amelie, Corey kissing her like he was a dying man, and then leaving because she had classes to teach. She was achy in too many places, and it’d been way too long since a man touched her in places that could make her scream with pleasure.

“You’re going to ignore me?”

She pulled the green dress from the hanger and turned toward him. “You know how you and Oliver and Alexander always tell me I leap before I think, that jumping might hurt me.”

He cocked a brow. “Yeah. And to think you were so shy and reserved as a child.”

“That’s what you get for dragging me out of my shell.”

He chuckled. “I think that was more Melanie than us.”

So very true. Melanie had dragged her out of her cocoon so many times, it became natural for her to be herself. To not care what others thought. To be bold and brave. And how did she repay her friendship? By creating distance. Letting her go through things alone. By not telling her how much she loved her and would always be there for her.

By falling in love with her daughter’s father.

That was by far the worst thing. She had no idea what Melanie felt for Corey.

“You were saying, ‘Vieve,” Brock prodded, drawing her out of the trance she had fallen in.

“I love him.”

Brock frowned, sighing. “You love him? Or you love Amelie so much you’ll settle for him to have her?”

This time she frowned. “Don’t try to interpret my feelings, Brock. I know what I feel. I love him and it has nothing to do with her. I love her, too. But differently. When he kisses me—”

“La, la, la,” Brock started singing, cutting her off and plugging his ears. “I don’t want to hear that kind of shit. You’re my little sister and I like to pretend you’re still a virgin.”

She smiled and winked. “Just like you’re a virgin.”

Then she walked out of the room, needing to get away from the conversation. He was right. It was weird to talk about sex with one of her brothers. Brock didn’t know what he was saying. The way she felt about Corey was not something born out of needing Amelie in her life. He made her feel…alive. Special and appreciated in a way she’d never felt before. Like the Easter basket filled with romance novels and her favorite tea. Two things she loved. The fact he noticed things like that and didn’t give her candy and the typical kind of things people usually did meant the world to her. Not that he even had to give her an Easter basket. It had been so unexpected, which made it that much more special.

She walked back into the room and stood for a moment so Brock could eye the front of the dress, then turned in a circle so he could see whole the picture.

“Well?”

He didn’t look happy. “You’re too damn beautiful. And it’s the perfect dress. If he hasn’t fallen in love with you yet, he will when he sees you in that.”

She tried not to smile, pressing her lips together, but knew she failed when Brock rolled his eyes.

“Whatever. Laugh. It’s true. He doesn’t deserve you. No man does.”

“You’re only saying that because I’m your sister.”
