This was not going to go well. Then again, I had to make it go well. This was life or death for me and maybe all of us.

“Yes. I…” I scanned the area before continuing. My mates were right outside the door, giving me the space I needed to complete my task but still, if someone saw her talking to me and vice versa, the shit would hit the fan. “I need to break into the High Council library.”

My lesser sister dropped her rag as a smile brightened her grumpy attitude. “Now we’re talking. I have a key.”

Well, there wouldn’t be any breaking in at all.

“My mates are here if we need coverage.”

Not the right thing to say. “Not my favorite thing to hear, but it will provide us some coverage if we get caught in there. Let’s go.”

I emerged from the room with my new frenemy, and we headed in the direction of the document room. She got in easily, of course, because she had a key. The place was packed. Nothing was in order.

This would not be the easy task we thought it was.

“Is there any heads or tails to this damned place?”

Soren leaned against one of the bookcases and groaned out loud. He scrubbed his hand down his face. “What kind of animal…”

I almost laughed at him so distraught over the library’s discord.

“We don’t have time to be upset about order, Soren. Tell us where to look.” Nico stood in front of me, his hands on his hips.

None of us knew where to start.

“The older ones are in the back, for the record. I’ve been known to read now and then. Naughty, I know, but we lessers aren’t as stupid as you’ve made us out to be.”

“Where?” I ignored her calm tirade.

“I’ll show you.”

We all followed the redheaded lesser to the back corner of the long library. The place smelled just like any other library, musty and dusty. Jude sneezed several times as we made our way to where she was leading us.

“Here they are. And here’s the key. I just decided it was better if I’m not caught with you four. I’ll pick the key up in the morning.”

After pointing, she made her statement and then left without any other warning. I looked around, thinking something or someone had kicked up her fear but there was nothing.

“We’re searching for what again? What was his name?” I asked, feeling stupid for not remembering.

“Veryion. Dragon Alpha of the sixteenth century. Or anything close to him or after him. Just look for something about the dragon war and the mountain. There has to be something.”

Nico scoffed. “You’ve been searching in those books for nearly a month now and just found that. We’re supposed to work miracles here?”

Soren ignored Nico’s comment and began searching, pulling down books and piling them on the floor. He would then plop down next to the pile and began reading.

“Between the four of us, we should find something.”

We all followed suit. Jude helped me pull down a stack of the older-looking leather bound books. They were as thick as my torso.

Hours went by. The air in this place was cold, thanks to vents that were everywhere, and I was thankful for it. My fever was actually tolerable in this place and even though we were supposed to hurry, I was actually enjoying this.

“Well, after Veryion’s reign, they had someone in charge of monitoring the environment and how it was changing. We don’t have that now, do we?”

Soren practically jumped up from his spot on the floor and crawled over to where Jude was reading from an extraordinarily large red leather book. It was so comical to see him scrabble across the worn carpet like a kid who was chasing something, but I kept my laughter to myself but shared a smile with Nico.

Soren read for a while and then popped his head up. “So they knew something was wrong, and they fixed it. Then they had someone who actually monitored the mountain. He was also in charge of maintaining the new balance. What new balance?”

“Balance? Between the dragons, or are we talking about something that keeps the mountain…placated?”
