The chief's eyes narrow. "Listen, Friday. I don't know what you're insinuating or who you're after here, but you're…," he pauses, lowering his voice and pointing a finger down at me, "You're dancing on the lip of a volcano and you're about to fall in. Believe me, you do not want to fall in."

Standing quickly, my chair flies back. "Seems like you already fell in a long time ago chief."

"Watch your mouth, officer," the chief says without his lips moving at all.

A few other officers stop what they're doing and start watching us.

"Oh, I'm watching all right. Every fucking thing."

"Pack your shit, Friday. Your transfer is effective now. You have forty-eight hours to report to Pensacola. Good fucking luck. Don't say I didn't try to help you." The chief turns and my eyes shoot arrows into his back. "You're a good officer, Friday. I'm doing you a favor here. You know why too. Accept it and let whatever you're doing go."

"I can't. It's bigger than me, and I need to set things straight for my woman and I'll never stop until I do."

The chief stops and stabs his hands into his hips. "Your woman?"

"That's right," I say firmly, claiming her publicly for the first time, widening my stance and preparing myself to fight if need be. I don't like the chief's tone one bit.

"I'd ask since when, but it doesn't matter anymore."

"Matters a lot more to you than you know...now. But you're going to find out soon enough."

The chief takes a step toward me.

"That a threat, Officer Friday."

"That's a fucking promise...Chief."

Another officer steps in between us, but he's unable to move me. The chief is a different matter. I don't take my eyes off him, not for a split second as we're separated.

"You're done here, Friday. Get your shit and get on up to Pensacola. Get the hell outta here."

"Done? I'm only getting started," I say with a smirk. Just like my life with her. It all comes back to her, and she's going to lead me right into the biggest investigation of my life and likely a reward that follows, a financial windfall that we can most certainly use to buy a house and start a family.

And it won't be up in Pensacola. You can take that to the bank.
