CHAPTER 4

AURORA

The night I met Dane Neri was amazing, and I thought about him every day since then.

****

Disco lights swirled above me in the darkness, and the music's steady pounding beat was deafening in The Paragon nightclub. I recognized Evan Talbot instantly. His back was turned from me, sitting in a booth. He was kissing a blond woman, his arm around her shoulders.

I walked up behind Evan and grabbed a handful of his sandy blond hair, jerking his head back.

His eyes went wide. “Rory! I can explain!”

“Hey!” the blond shouted.

“Shut up bitch!” I cut her off and looked down at Evan. “Fuck you.”

I turned, bumping into a waitress carrying a tray of drinks, and moved through the crowd toward the club's entrance doors. I choked back a sob as tears fell. It wasn’t the first time I’d caught Evan with a woman. He fed me some bullshit story about the last woman being a client of his. Evan was good-looking, like a famous fashion model you’d see on a cover of GQ magazine. He was a wealthy lawyer from Trenton and a few years younger than me.

I looked over my shoulder, the disco lights making me dizzy as I made my way through the packed club. Evan was walking straight toward me. Then I collided right into a man’s hard chest and almost fell back. The man caught me, holding onto my arms, and I caught the scent of his cologne. I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders and kissed him.

He placed his hands on my waist and pulled me against him, deepening the kiss. I tasted liquor and fresh mint when he slid his tongue into my mouth. I moaned and pulled away.

He chuckled. “He’s gone.”

I stepped back. “Thanks.”

I tried to move around him, but he blocked me. “Whoa. I should at least get your name for helping you out with whatever that was.”

I smiled and offered my hand. “My name is Aurora.”

“Dane Neri.” He replied, shaking my hand. He looked so sinfully handsome, wearing a dark button-down shirt, with the sleeves halfway rolled up his forearms.

I just made a stupid move that could have costed my life - I kissed the notorious King of the dirty city, Dane Neri.

“We’ve never met, but I know who you are. I’m so very sorry for what I just did.”

“No apology needed,” Dane replied with a smirk. “I don’t mind saving a pretty damsel in distress. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed that kiss.”

The men that stood behind Dane looked menacing, with their arms folded across burly chests. “Well, I should be going.”

“Wait. I’m having the same kind of night as you, it seems. How about I buy you a drink? Don’t worry about Carlo and my men. I’m not Scarface. They won’t pull out guns and shoot up the place.”

He had a good sense of humor, and he didn’t look or sound like Tony Montana.

I smiled. “Sure, why the hell not.”

We sat together in a cozy booth on the second-level bar area of the club. As we talked and drank a few cocktails, I forgot all about Evan. Dane was attentive and didn’t dominate our conversation. He showed confidence but not with a cocky attitude like some men I knew, with a boyish sense of humor. I liked the sound of his voice when he called me Rory.

We spent the night together in a room at the Ocean Casino Resort with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Dane’s muscular, athletic body and his bold hard cock were my playground. His lips on my skin were intoxicating, and he made every inch of my body quiver when he worked his tongue on my pussy. Sex with him was explosive, insatiable, and unforgettable.

***

Dane glared at me. His firm grip on my arms hurt. Then he shoved me away like I was a hot flame. He raked a hand through his hair and turned from me to pace the floor in the parlor, shaking his head. The man with black hair, who shot the man holding a gun to me, whispered to a young woman with blond hair. He cupped her cheeks, telling her something that I couldn’t hear. Dane stepped over the dead man and rushed past me out of the parlor.

I just stood there, frozen. I felt bile rise in my throat as I looked down at the dead man on the floor. Dane came back into the parlor with the man named Brody following behind.

Brody was breathing heavy, shoving his gun back in his shoulder holster. “I unloaded a full clip on the fucker, but he got away in a Mercedes. Someone was behind the wheel.”
