“If he makes a move on me, it will bring him out in the open. We can catch him.”

“I don’t even have enough deputies to pull patrol,” the sheriff said. “I can’t spare one to provide you protection.”

Griff shook his head. “You don’t have to. I’ve got her covered,” he said. “I’ll be with her twenty-four-seven.”

The sheriff’s eyes narrowed. “So, is the rumor true?”

Rachel’s brow puckered. “What rumor?”

“My deputy is engaged?” Sheriff Faulkner frowned and looked from Rachel to Griff and back to Rachel.

Rachel’s face flushed bright pink, the color traveling all the way out to her ears.

“Yes, sir,” Griff answered for them, sparing Rachel the lying. “She agreed to be my fiancé last night.” Which was true, even if only for pretend.

The sheriff’s frown deepened. “And you’re happy about it?”

Rachel laughed. “Why wouldn’t I be? He asked.”

“She said yes.” Griff slipped his arm around her back.

Rachel slid her arm around him and grinned. “He’s stuck with me.”

“Please tell me you plan on staying in this area,” the sheriff said,

Griff nodded. “I do.”

“Good. I can’t afford to lose a good deputy.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” she said.

“And I’ll be with her every minute of the day to keep her safe.”

“Do you have a gun?” the sheriff asked.

Griff opened his jacket, displaying his shoulder holster and the Glock nestled inside.

Sheriff Faulkner nodded. “Okay then. I’m counting on you to keep her safe.”

Griff held up his hand as if swearing-in. “I will.”

“Were you able to dust my apartment?” Rachel asked.

“We did,” Dalton said. “We found two sets of prints. Yours and another set.”

“They could be mine.”

Dalton nodded. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to get a copy of your prints to compare.”

Griff nodded. “Sure.”

Dalton brought out a fingerprint card and an ink pad. In less than five minutes, he had Griff’s prints scanned in and compared to those they’d lifted in Rachel’s apartment.

“They’re a match,” Dalton said.

The sheriff snorted. “Which means your admirer didn’t leave anything for us to go on.”

“Did you canvass my neighbors?” Rachel asked. “Did anyone see a man come and go, a strange vehicle?”
