“The feds should consider this a serial killing if he’s killed at least three victims,” Rachel said. “I don’t want to let him kill again.”

JoJo shook her head. “Especially considering his gift to you this morning. My friend, you’re his next target.”

Griff’s hands tightened into fists. “We can’t let it happen.”

“And we won’t,” Jake assured them.

“What about security cameras at your apartment,” Tayo asked. “Could we review the footage from around the time he delivered your necklace?”

Rachel shook her head. “The security cameras were down at the apartment complex when he delivered the gift.”

“Convenient,” Max murmured.

Jake nodded. “Makes you wonder if he tampered with them.”

“The FBI won’t take on a serial killing case with only two victims at this point,” Rachel said. “But he’s established an M.O. with the first two killings, and he’s sent the gift to me.”

“Why the gap between the first and second?” Sawyer asked. “And now it’s been six months since your sister’s death. Why now?”

Griff frowned. “Christy’s mother mentioned a couple of times that her daughter looked a lot like Rachel.”

Rachel nodded. “Although Lindsay and I were half-sisters, we looked like we could be twins. We had different fathers, but we took after our mother. It could be the killer has issues with women who look like us.”

“Other than looks, what else do all three of you have in common?” Jake asked.

“Christy and Lindsay were engaged, which is in keeping with the wedding veil angle,” Emily said. “But that doesn’t hold true for Rachel.”

Griff and Rachel exchanged a look.

“Actually,” Rachel said, “to explain Griff’s sudden presence in my life, and so he could stay in my room at the hospital, we made it public that we’d just gotten engaged.”

“How soon after Lindsay and Christy were engaged were they murdered?” JoJo asked.

Griff’s gut knotted. “The next day for both.”

“He likes women who look like Rachel,” Emily said. “And he doesn’t like it when they choose to marry someone other than him. He might have thought he had a chance with them, then feels betrayed when they say yes to someone else. It makes him angry. I’d bet my certification that he will make a move soon.”

Rachel’s gaze met Griff’s.

He’d promised to keep her safe and help her find the man who’d killed her sister.

He hoped like hell they found the guy before he added another tick mark toward becoming an FBI serial killer.

Before he murdered Rachel.

CHAPTER9

Rachel showeredand changed into a loose T-shirt and shorts, her usual attire to sleep in. As she glanced at herself in the mirror, she regretted that she didn’t have a sexy lingerie set.

Then she chuckled softly. She’d never wanted a sexy nightie before she’d met Griff. He knew she was a law enforcement officer, an expert marksman and working in a male-dominated career. Most guys would be intimidated or consider her too masculine. Not Griff. He seemed to like her the way she was. And she liked him. He made her feel…feminine. Not all soft and girly. More like strong and sexy…completely aware of her body and how it would fit with his.

She touched a hand to her breast, surprised at how quickly her heart beat at just the thought of their bodies fitting together.

RJ had settled her in a room on the second floor. The room had a French door leading out onto the upper deck.

Griff had been assigned the room beside hers. If she had any trouble, all she had to do was yell, and he’d come running.

Rachel liked it better when he’d been in the same room with her. Not that she was afraid to be alone. Yeah, he turned her on, and she’d like to do more with Griff than kiss and hold hands. More than that, she liked being with him. His presence made her feel less alone. More complete. She realized that had been what was missing in her life all along.
