Rachel wrapped her legs around him and drew him closer.

Griff lay down on her, milking his release as long as it would last.

Knowing he was crushing the air from her lungs, he rolled her with him to their sides and held her close, relishing the intimate connection, feeling like he’d finally come home. Throughout making love to her, he hadn’t noticed the usual pain in his leg, so caught up in the moment, it hadn’t mattered.

Rachel rested a hand on his chest and pressed her lips to his skin. “That was…”

“Incredible, amazing, mind-blowing?” he offered.

She tilted her head to one side. “Good.”

“Good?” He frowned. “Just good?”

Rachel traced a finger around his nipple. “For round one. Let me know when you’re up for round two.”

He laughed, smacked her naked ass and hugged her tight. “Your sex talk is perfect.”

“You think so?” She tipped her head back and smiled up at him. “Wait until I unleash my sweet nothings on you.”

“I can’t wait,” he said.

Her lips twisted. “Me, too. I’ll have to come up with them for next time. What is a sweet nothing, anyway?”

“It’s whatever you want it to be, babe.” He rested his cheek against her silky hair. “You think you can sleep now?”

Rachel yawned and snuggled into his body. “Maybe. I’ll let you know how it goes when we wake in the morning.” Another yawn and she was asleep in Griff’s arms.

He shook his head, a smile lingering on his lips. Rachel was confident in her experience as a cop, capable of things most women didn’t do and so much more. She had a sense of humor, even if it was while they were making love. And she cared deeply about family and the people she considered family.

If he hadn’t been sure before, being with her now brought it home to him.

He was in love with Rachel West.

CHAPTER10

Griff woke before Rachel, his mind racing, searching for ways to reveal the killer’s identity. All night long, he’d been basically terrified. He could not fail in this mission. He couldn’t lose another person he loved because he hadn’t shot the killer first.

Before daylight, he dropped a kiss on Rachel’s lips and slid out of bed without waking her. He carried his clothes into the bathroom, where he dressed, shaved and brushed his teeth.

Rachel was still asleep when he left the bathroom. After checking the lock on the French doors, he stood over the bed once more, staring down at the woman he was falling for, hard and fast. He smiled at the thought.

She was special.

Griff had to do everything in his power to keep her safe.

He opened the door into the hallway, twisted the lock and closed it securely behind him. The lodge was wired with security cameras, and there were enough trained men and women around to protect Rachel if the killer tried to get past them to her. Still, Griff hesitated to leave her for even a second. But he needed to see Jake and get in touch with Hank and his computer guy.

He descended the stairs and passed through the great room and dining room into the kitchen.

At first, Griff thought the kitchen was empty. Then Gunny straightened from bending to pull a couple of skillets from a lower cabinet.

“Good morning, Griff.’ He tipped his head to the left. “Grab a cup of Joe. RJ and JoJo are taking care of the animals, and I’ve got breakfast under control. Jake and Thorn are already in the war room, working. You’re needed down there more than here.”

Griff followed his nose to the fragrant coffee urn in the corner of the kitchen and poured a mug full of the fresh black brew. He took a sip, letting hot liquid burn down his throat into his belly, fortifying him for the day to come.

If the killer stayed true to form, he’d be angling for Rachel today.

His coffee mug in hand, he passed Gunny and opened the door to the basement.
