“You were sleeping so soundly I didn’t want to wake you. And I wanted to get Swede working on finding all the possible parolees in the area that might fit our killer.”

“I’ll let it slide this time,” she said and melted against him. “Do you have any regrets about last night?”

“Yes, one.”

She leaned back, a frown marring her brow. “Really?”

He brushed a strand of her hair back from her cheek. “I regret that I waited for a fourth date before making love to you out of some stupid sense of chivalry.”

She smiled. “A fourth date that didn’t happen.”

He nodded. “And I regret not calling you after I returned to the States. You could’ve used a shoulder to lean on when you lost your sister.”

She shook her head. “You lost your entire team. You couldn’t have helped me.”

“You’re right. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to help anyone. Still, I would like to have been there for you.”

She pressed her forehead to his chest. “You are now. Though I think I’m tough enough to handle a lot, I’m not sure I can handle this on my own. I have no idea which direction he’ll come from.”

“I’ll do my best to be with you always.” He tipped her chin up. “You have to do the same.”

“It’s hard when I’ve been on my own for so long. I just naturally do things on my own.”

“Until we catch the killer, I need you to be with me.”

Rachel nodded. “I’ll be glad when this is over and we have him in custody. I feel like I can’t do anything without looking over my shoulder.” She sighed. “But I can’t let that get me down. We have work to do to find him.” She tipped her head toward her bed. “Do we have time for an encore?”

He gathered her in his arms and kissed her until he was forced to come up for air.

She laughed and shook her head. “I’ll take that as a consolation prize, and we don’t have time for more mattress gymnastics.”

“I want to, but Swede said he’d get back to us in an hour. That hour is up. Can I get a rain check for tonight?”

She nodded. “Though it sounds like we’ll be working the Watering Hole until late.”

“You’re not working anything.”

“I’ll have you with me at all times,” she said. “I would love to help out Gunny and RJ to pay them back for everything they’re doing for me.”

Griff frowned. “We’ll see.”

Rachel smiled. “You know we’re going to do it. For now, I’m going to brush my teeth, and then we’ll go down to the war room and see what Swede has found.”

Griff walked to the door. “I’ll meet you in the hall in two minutes.”

“You’re on.”

Griff stepped out and waited until Rachel closed and locked the door behind him.

Like Rachel had said… This sucked.

Griff wanted to take his relationship with Rachel to the next level, to woo her properly, take her out on dates and get to know everything there was to know about her.

Her life had gone on hold when the killer she’d been hunting had made her his next target.

He squared his shoulders.

They had to catch the bastard. The sooner they did, the sooner they could get on with living.
