“You did. He fired at the same time. You just happened to catch the bullet.”

“Oh. Well, hell.”

He chuckled. “The OR doc got you all fixed up. You should have a full recovery.”

“How long do I have to stay here?” she asked.

“Until you feel up to leaving and the doctor signs off.”

“I feel up to leaving.” Rachel tried to sit up. Pain shot through her abdomen. She fell back against the hospital bed.

“Hey, you just had surgery.” He brushed back a strand of her hair from her forehead. “Give yourself a little time to recuperate.”

“I hate hospitals,” she groused.

“I appreciate this hospital, the OR doc and the flight medics who got you here in time.”

She grimaced. “Was it that bad?”

He reached for her hand. “You lost a lot of blood.”

She liked how strong and warm his fingers were. “How long have I been here?”

“One night,” he said.

“When did you get here?”

“Shortly after they flew you in last night.”

She stared up at him. “We got him.”

He nodded. “You did. He won’t hurt anyone ever again.”

She closed her eyes and squeezed his hand. “Thank God.”

She raised the hand he was holding and brought it to her lips. “Thanks for coming after me. I wouldn’t have made it without you.”

He grinned. “You were doing a pretty good job of running away from him.”

“I wasn’t going to let him kill me. I had to live to take him down. And we were right. He was there among us all along. Alan Smith, our package delivery guy. Someone everyone knew.” She sighed. “It’s scary what we don’t know about each other.”

“It’s not scary what I know about you,” Griff said, bringing her hand to his lips to brush a kiss across the backs of her knuckles. “You’re strong, brave and loyal. And you don’t give up. No matter what. That’s what I love about you.”

Her heart skipped a beat at his mention of love.

“You know, now that the killer is dead, I won’t need a bodyguard,” she said. The idea made her sad. “I’ll miss having you around.”

“You won’t have to miss me,” Griff said. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“No?” Joy made her lips spread into a smile. “That’s good news. Are you staying on with the Brotherhood Protectors?”

He nodded. “I am. And I’m staying in Colorado.”

She grinned. “You like it here, huh?”

“No. I like it here with you.”

Her chest swelled. “And here I thought I was just the job to you.”
