Dezi carried a tray full of drinks to a table in the far corner. Once she’d distributed their order, she hurried back to the staff table and rested a hand on Grimm’s shoulder.

“Did they find anything else in the mining tunnels belonging to Penny?” she asked.

Drake shook his head. “It was only the item they could link to her. But they are certain she was there.”

Dezi sighed. “We have to find her.”

Cassie joined them, pulling up a chair. “We need more of a clue. We have to have something to link her to those who have taken her, why and where. I’ve dug into every database of crimes and criminals in this area. I’m tapped out on ideas and feeling like I’ve let Penny down.”

“We all feel that way,” Dezi said.

Grimm pushed to his feet and slipped an arm around Devi. “Walk with me?”

She smiled at him and nodded. “It’s a gorgeous night. Let’s go out on the porch.”

Once outside, Grimm pulled Dezi into his arms. “I didn’t really want to walk. I only wanted to hold you in my arms and kiss you.”

“Still like pounding nails?” she asked.

“I do. It’s the most rewarding thing to do. Carpenters get to see the fruits of their labor. It feels good that I’m building something now, not just tearing it down.”

“I’m happy that you’re happy,” she said.

“I never thought I could be happy. And yet, here I am. Stupid happy and in love with a beautiful woman. Hell, I can’t stop smiling.” He gathered her hands in his. “I’m thinking of making it more permanent.”

Her eyebrows rose and her cheeks heated. “Oh yeah? And how do you plan on doing that?”

He dug in his pocket and pulled out a ring box.

Dezi’s heart went into overdrive and her breathing became labored. “What are you doing?”

He grinned and dropped to one knee. “I would think it obvious.” He took her hand and looked up into her face. “Dezi Thomas, would you consider marrying me and making me even happier than I already am?”

“Are you sure?”

He laughed. “Not exactly the response I’d hope for. But I can work with it. Yes, I think you’re worth it.”

“No, I mean you were so set against marriage.”

He nodded. “Until I met you. I love you with all of my heart and promise to care for you, love you and treat you with the respect you deserve. So, what’s it to be? Are you willing to take a risk on me?”

Her heart bursting with pride and love, Dezi flung her arms around Grimm’s neck. “Yes! I would be honored to marry you.”

“Whew. You had me worried there for a moment.”

“You’re the only person I can imagine spending the rest of my life with,” Dezi said. “I love you, Michael Reaper.”

“And I love you, too, Dezi.”

Applause sounded from the other end of the porch as Grimm’s team and Dezi’s sisters surrounded them to congratulate the newly engaged couple. Dezi was proud to call these people family. And she couldn’t wait to expand her family with Grimm and as many children as she could convince him to have.
