When their lips met, Gia was in disbelief. Surely, this wasn’t happening. Surely, the warmth of Roxi’s breath on her cheek wasn’t real. Certainly, the beating of another heart against her chest was in her head.

Except it wasn’t.

This time, when they kissed, there were no cars rushing past or dogs being walked. This time, there was no pulling away and making excuses. This time, Gia let go and enjoyed the head rush that didn’t come from alcohol or drugs. She laced her free hand into Roxi’s hair and felt the silkiness envelope her. She gave in as her body led the way.

When they parted, she was again at a loss for words. Her fantasy always ended there—girl gets the girl; fade to black. Well, that’s not exactly true. The fantasy had them falling into a bed full of feather pillows and rose petals, laughing and undressing, stopping to make-out, leading to more primal activities. And then—girl gets girl; fade to black.

“You okay,chica?”

“Very much so,” Gia said. Unconvincingly.

“Too soon? I thought you—”

“No, no. Not at all too soon. It’s been a long time coming—definitely not too soon.”

“Then, what?”

“I guess, now what? I have dreamed of this moment for so long, but you’re chasing a dream that’s not in my orbit anymore. And I can’t stop you from it. I won’t. So, now what? We go back to my hotel and have a little fun, but then I have to go home and you’re going on tour and—”

“Hey, hey,” Roxi shushed. “One day at a time, remember?”

Gia nodded.

“Are you really ready to jump headfirst into something, like a week after you hit your one-year?”

“I—”

“Trust me, you’re not. But we can go back to your hotel like you said, and see what happens, hm? Just have a little fun? God knows there’s some pent-up energy here and you just got your hall pass. How about we see where things go? First things first?”

“You’re just full of sayings, huh?”

“I am, matter of fact. But you know I’m right.” Roxi held her hand out again. An invitation.

Walking out the stage entrance, hand-in-hand, Gia felt the gratitude fill her chest. She’d been patient. When she wanted to throw it all away and wallow in a stiff drink or an unfiltered cigarette—or an unknown woman—she hadn’t. She’d stumbled and gotten on track, then stumbled some more, gotten on track and would stumble more in the future. Roxi had showed her the path since they’d met, and still was. “You’re right.”

“What?” Roxi stopped mid-stride.

“You’re right, about first things first.”

“I know.”

“And the first thing I’d like to do—if it’s okay—is kiss you again. In this parking lot, in front of whoever. Because the first time, in the street, well—I still feel bad about that and I’d like to make a proper amends.”

“Amends accepted.”

A blinking streetlight lit them from above as Gia’s hand found the back of Roxi’s head once more, lips met and pulses raced. Infatuation was easy, Gia knew that. She’d fallen down the infatuation trap many times in her life. What she didn’t know, and was ready to find out, was what One Day at a Time felt like in a two-way, mutually respectful relationship.

And with that, the girl got the girl—for the night—and the blinking light petered out.

Fade to black.
