“The next time I call and schedule a meet, you’d better be there.”

“I will.” The words left me in a rush as I opened my eyes.

“Stay away from Finley Salvatore. Before it’s too late,” the voice warned before he ended the call.

I sat there, staring at nothing, until my thumb skimmed the screen and I exited the image of Baldeon’s face. Instead, I typed with trembling fingers, sending a message to the only person I could.

Dad, I need to talk to you.

I waited. Two seconds later, he responded.

Unknown: You okay, Button?

Tears slipped from the corners of my eyes. It was just like him to only think of me.Yeah, just shaken.I closed my eyes and tried to breathe, before opening them once more.I want this to be over.

Unknown: Me, too. Wait a sec…

I waited, concern mounting as he didn’t text back, until the phone vibrated in my hand. I answered in an instant. “Dad.”

“Can’t talk long, sweetheart,” he gasped, sounding out of breath. “But I know you’re scared.”

“Dad,” I whimpered. “I…” Sirens blared in the background, making me flinch. “Where are you?”

“Hiding in an abandoned house in Moris Dime. It’s…dangerous, but safe from the Salvatores, I think.”

Safe…it didn’t sound safe to me.

“As soon as you make contact again, we’ll get out of here, okay? Go somewhere nice, some-place we can lay low. Australia sounds nice.”

I smiled. It was just like him to make me feel better. I swiped the tears from my face. “Yeah, Australia sounds really nice.”

“Okay, I have to go, Button,” he murmured. “We’ll see each other soon, okay?”

“Okay, Dad.”

The sound of the elevator thudded before slow footsteps drew my gaze. I lowered my phone with shaking hands as Kat headed to her room in silence. I swallowed hard and rose from my bed.

“Hey,” I called, my words hollow and strange as I headed to Kat’s room. “Everything okay?”

“Just tired,” she smiled, and flopped down on her bed. “I’ve had this damn headache for two days now, can’t seem to shake it.”

I took a step closer as she lay her head on her pillow and covered her eyes with her forearm. “You want me to call the doctor?”

“No, I’m fine. I think I just need to sleep it off. Not the best roommate right now, am I?”

I sat on the edge of the bed beside her. “You think I care about that?”

“No,” she answered. “Not someone like you.” She shifted her arm and cracked one eye open, finding me. “What happened to you, anyway? You ran out of that class like the damn devil was chasing you.”

The devil…yeah, you could say that.

I just gave a shake of my head. “Wasn’t feeling well myself. I think I just needed air.”

“You do look pale,” she observed. “Maybe there’s something going around.”

“Maybe,” I answered.

But deep down, I knew the truth. There was no sickness…not for me.
