There was only Finley, and for him…there was no cure. My phone gave abeep.

I looked down.

Institute announcement: compulsory class. Building 1: Room 62.

“Now?” I moaned, and glanced at Kat’s phone. But she hadn't received a message. She just lay there, her arm over her eyes, then she started to snore.

32

Finley

I left the control room and strode past Mateo’s empty office, still consumed by the image of Pavlov standing over Anna’s bed. I wouldn’t go after him. That’s not how things were done with the Salvatores.

No, that wasn’t how we operated at all.

My phonebeeped.I dragged it up and checked the notifications.

Call tracking information: Caller Unknown. Duration: 2.05 minutes. Message received: 1 in total.

I smiled. It didn’t take her long to run to good old dad.

The burn of satisfaction flared. I wanted her running, wanted her confused.

I wanted her with nowhere to run to…but me.

I strode through the doors of my building and into the elevator, but instead of stopping at their rooms, I went higher.Beep.My phone sent another alert. With a snarl, I looked at the message.

Call tracking information: Caller Unknown. Duration: 1.02 minutes. Message received: 2 in total.

I stopped in the middle of stepping out of the elevator and scanned the previous message. Both caller IDs were unknown, but they were two separate logs. Two separate logs meant two separate cell towers. If that was the case…then there were two different callers. If her dad was one…then who the fuck was the other?

The elevator doors tried to close against me. I stepped out, forced myself to type out a message, and hit send. Almost instantly, there was a reply.

Max: On my way.

My phonebeepedagain. I fought the need to react and glanced down at an image. It was some kind of drug, the vial's label filling up the entire screen. The second I read the name, I froze…and my blood ran cold.

Sodium pentothal.

I exited the image and found the message.

Kilpatrick: You don’t want to find out who killed your mother, then sit this one out like a fucking chump. But don’t come begging when it’s all done. You can run back to daddy instead…

My phonebeepedonce more.Institute announcement: compulsory class. Building 1: Room 62.

I clenched my jaw as I read the message. I knew it was him in a fucking instant.

What the fuck are you doing?

Kilpatrick: What you should be. Don’t get in my way.

I jerked my gaze back to the vial. Fucking truth serum…that’s what it was. Shit like that was fucking toxic. Goddamn initiation. It made us all fucking animals. But some more than others. Alexi had changed in the last twelve months. I guess his brother taking his own bullet to the head did that to someone. And just like that, the second son was forced to take his older brother’s place.

That kinda thing could fuck you up for life. The only difference was…his brother had survived. Word was, six months in a mental institution had done nothing to help him. The fucker was still broken and dangerous. The first son was nothing more than a walking trigger.

Now his younger brother was taking every fucking attack as a personal battle, determined to find out who was behind it all. The elevator gave adingand opened as I turned. Max strode out, hands fisted in his pockets, and lifted his head as I headed his way.

“Come with me,” I ordered. I didn’t have time to deal withAlexi’s shit. But it looked like I needed to make time.
