“Is there a problem?”

I winced, and forced a long, slow exhale. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

We stepped back into the elevator and waited for the doors to close. “Has Pavlov ever stepped over the line?”

I saw him flinch and slowly turn his gaze to mine. “Do you know something I don’t?”

Didn’t answer the question though, did it?

“Not that I know of,” he continued.

“Well, he has…and he needs to be careful.”

Max gave a slow nod. “Understood. Is there something specific you’d like me to discuss with him?”

We stopped at the foyer. “No, not yet. But I’ll be watching.”

It wasn’t all I wanted to say, but right now it was all I had time for.

The doors opened as Max dragged his massive hands from his pockets. “You want an escort?”

I shook my head as Alexi’s face filled my head. If anything, he was about to get his ass kicked. The fewer people who saw that, the better. “No. I’ll be back soon.”

“Okay, Fin,” Max answered as I set my focus on the goddamn doors.

There was always fucking something. Always blood…always fucking danger. I dragged my teeth across my lip and headed for the door outside, chasing down the stupid motherfucker that was about to get his ass kicked. There was only one person I wanted to chase. Only one person I wanted to think about.

I lifted my phone as I headed for Building One and pressed the button, bringing up the CCTV feed to her bedroom. But Anna wasn’t there, nor was she in the goddamn apartment.Fuck.I didn’t have time to search the entire goddamn island for her.

What if she'd run again? Packed her backpack, and this time she’s gone for good?

The text messages and calls. Two goddamn callers.Twocallers.I didn’t want to think about that. If Anna was gone, my father would see it as a personal betrayal. Then there wouldn’t be a goddamn thing I could do to protect her.

The thought of that exploded inside my head. I raked my hair backwards, punched through the doors to Building One, and made for the lower levels. I knew the fucking classroom I was headed to, knew it all too goddamn well.

My jaw clenched…that fucking twitch was back with a vengeance. I needed to close this shit down with Kilpatrick and get out of there. I had bigger things to worry about.

Like keeping Anna alive.

But the sonofabitch had brought in my mother. The one fucking thing I wouldn’t tolerate. Not from him…not from anyone.I strode down the ramp to the lower floor and along the hall, turned, and strode toward the end. Lights were on inside classroom 62. The door was ajar, even from here. I glanced at my phone and shoved the door open…finding the goddamn classroom empty.

I scanned the cleared benches, the weapons all put away. Figured. Plastic flapped and fluttered over the air vents. Fuck, it was hot in here. I yanked my collar as the heat moved in.

“I knew you’d come,” Kilpatrick murmured behind me.

I spun, finding the stupid fucking asshole pushing off the wall.

“What the fuck have you done, Alexi?”

He just gave a shrug and stepped further inside the room. “If you’re not interested in finding out if the Rossis ordered the hit on your mom, then I’ll do it for you.”

Rage howled inside me. I crossed the space in a blinding fucking blur to grab him by his shirt and yank him closer. “Thefuck didyou say to me?”

He was breathing hard, his dark eyes incensed with anger. He loomed over me, desperation mingling with rage in his eyes. He wanted to show me how much hedidn’tgive a shit…but he did. He was fucking unraveling under that cold exterior. I saw it now, saw the fucking demon inside, the one who howled for vengeance. I knew what that felt like.

“What are you waiting for?” he growled, leaning into me.

For my goddamn father to give the word…that’s what.
