If he thought we hadn’t entertained the idea that the fucking Rossis had ordered the hit, then he didn’t know us at all. Thoughts of my father filled my head, incensed, consumed by wrath and calling for war. He was barely hanging on as it was. One fucking wrong word whispered in his ear and my world would be one huge fucking battlefield.

Alexi saw that…he fucking saw that.

And he wanted it.

I clenched my fist, desperate to punch the bastard in the face and leave…until I heard footsteps approaching along the hallway. I shoved him away as the door opened and in strode one of the rich assholes who hung out with Zakharov.

“This the right place?” the guy asked, glancing at us.

I jerked my gaze to Kilpatrick. “What the fuck is this?”

But his face was paling. He licked his lips. “Leon was supposed to send the message to you and Lazarus.”

“Well, guess what?” I growled, and shoved the stupid goddamn idiot away. “Leon fucked up.”

Still, the plastic flapped quietly as the thud of boots came from outside the door once more. I lifted my gaze to the plastic tape across the vents as the rage inside me turned to fear. What the fuck did he have planned? I jerked my gaze toward him, catching sight of something on the floor. Small canisters lay there. Two…no, wait.I scanned the room, finding two more, as the door swung open and Lazarus Rossi strode in.

“What bullshit class is this, Salvatore?” He cut me a chilling glare and peered at the rich asshole.

Until the poor bastard shifted nervously and took a step back.

“Don’t fucking ask me,” I answered, cutting Kilpatrick a glare. “I got the same text as you.”

“Fucking compulsory classes, as if I come here to learn this bullshit.”

Movement came from the doorway, a woman, small, petite, her long blonde hair shimmering over one shoulder. She lifted her gaze to me as she entered and, with a thick Russian accent, murmured, “Am I late?”

“Fuck no, you’re not late,” Lazarus snapped, folded his arms across his chest, and turned to Alexi. “What the fuck is wrong with you, Kilpatrick? You look nervous…”

Alexi just flinched. “No, I’m not nervous,” he answered as the door started to close.

I glimpsed the guard through the glass panel just as a familiar voice called along the hallway.“Wait!”

My heart lunged, and panic bloomed inside my head as she barreled through the doorway.

“Anna?”I growled.

Her eyes widened with surprise as she slowly glanced from me, to Lazarus, then to Kilpatrick. “What’s going on?”

“That’s what I was asking,” Lazarus snapped.

Then the door closed with athudand the click of the lock sounded.

The slow hiss of the canisters was barely audible, but the sharp, bitter tang in the air burned my fucking eyes. Kilpatrick turned, grabbed one of the masks from the bench, and yanked it over his head before tossing me the other one. All of a sudden, the chilling grip of fear plunged deep.

I grasped the mask as the room started to sway.“Anna.”I jerked my gaze toward her.

Movement came from the corner of my eye as my stomach rolled violently and clenched.

“Cover your fucking face, Salvatore,” Kilpatrick barked, snatching the mask from my hand before shoving it over my head and securing it over my face. “Breathe, Fin.”

I sucked hard, deep breaths as low, brutal groans filled my ears. Lazarus stumbled forward and shoved out a hand.“What the fuck are you doing?”he roared, wrenching his gaze to me, then to Kilpatrick.

I almost gave a shit, but I was too busy shoving him aside and scanning the room for Anna.

I found her on the floor, on her knees, gagging and retching, one hand over her nose. Through the blur of my tears, she lifted her gaze to mine. “Fin…”

“It’s truth serum. I rigged it,”Kilpatrick barked.
