Movement came at the end of the hallway. The same doc that had treated Baldeon lifted his head from a file in his hand, took one look at me, and froze. I didn’t slow, just slipped through the doorway and into the room.

“Things will change after this…” Alexi’s low voice reached me as I lifted my fists.

“Damn right they will,” I growled, yanking the plastic curtain aside, and lunged.

The scrape of a chair squealed against the floor…but everything else waswrong.

Alexi shot to his feet as the chair toppled. He lifted his hands for protection, but it wasn’t for himself. It took me a second to see the petrified stare of the blonde in the bed. But my anger was unrelenting, punching through my veins like a merciless shot of heroin. I grabbed him by the shirtfront as his eyes widened.

“Fin,” he warned, casting a glance toward the petite blonde.

“I fucking warned you, Alexi,” I snarled as I drove him backwards. “I fucking warned you.”

He lashed out in desperation, grabbing my shirt as he struggled us away from the bed and lowered his voice. “I haven’t said a damn thing.”

“And you fucking won’t…” the words were more than a warning.

They were a goddamn promise.

The Kilpatricks were the closest we had to my mother’s kin. But I swear to God, that savagery in me was calling for blood. Alexi just licked his lips, not caring about himself. His hands fisted tighter in my shirt and he leaned close. “Not in front of her, okay?”

I froze.

Since when did Alexi give a shit about anyone but himself?I glanced over my shoulder to the blonde in the bed as she gripped the steel railing and forced herself to sit up.

“No,” she protested, her eyes fixed on me. “Do not hurt him.”

I could almost hear church bells ringing inside my head, drawing me back to the past we shared.

“I didn’t say a damn thing,” he repeated, drawing my eyes back to his gaze. “It’s not any of my business what the Salvatores do.” He licked his lips as desperation roared in his gaze. “Fuck me, Fin. We’re practically kin.”

“That wouldn’t stop you exposing me,” I forced the words through clenched teeth. “Or her.”

He flinched, and released his hold. “You really think I’d do something like that?”

“It’s all part of the initiation, right?” I only drew him closer, clenching until the fabric tore in my grip.

He just held my gaze, sinking into the depths of my rage.

“You think I’devergo after you that way? I’ve been your fucking ally from the goddamn beginning. All of that…all of fucking that was to find out the truth!”

He dropped his hands, leaving me the only one burning with rage.

“I stood beside you at your mother’s funeral.” He stared into my eyes. “If that means nothing to you, then by all means, have at it. But I’m not going to fight you, Finley. Not now…not ever.”

The words were a blow all of their own.

And in my head, those church bells continued to toll.

One for every year my mother had been alive.

I could almost smell the cold, dank earth as I had the day we'd put her in the ground.

Almost feel that detached torment.

Almost feel that icy rage.

I licked my lips and forced the words. “You never heard what she said.”
