He didn't look away. “I never heard what she said.”

“Your phone…”

“Is smashed and already disposed of.”

I clicked my lips. “And the backup?”

“What backup? You know better than to have anything leading to any kind of external account.”

I sucked in a harsh breath, and slowly unfurled my fists. Even if he was taller, I would've made him hurt. I just kept his stare. “Just as well, I’d hate to hurt that pretty jawline of yours.”

He gave a cocky smirk and rubbed his chin. “It is one of a kind.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, well. It was a bullshit stunt.”

“I know.” Jesus, he even looked remorseful as he cast the petite blonde a careful glance.

I followed his gaze, finding her gaze riveted on me. “I didn’t catch your name.”

“Leila,” she answered in a thick Russian accent. “Leila Ivanov.”

“The Ivanovs.” I crossed the floor to take her hand in mine.

Jesus, she was small, all skin and bones, cold skin. It made me wince as I let her hand go. I glanced along her bed, then met her blue eyes. “So, you’re okay?”

“Yes,” she answered automatically. “I will be fine.”

“She fainted, so the doctor just wants to keep an eye on her for tonight.”

I cast him a careful glance. I hadn’t missed the fact we had a murderer on the island, and the last place anyone saw Baldeon was when he was discharged from here. But as I met Alexi’s stare, I saw the same haunting realization in his eyes.

“You’ll have security here?” I asked.

“I’ll be here,” he answered.

I lowered my gaze to his chest, then further, to the waistband of his pants, searching for the bulge of a weapon. It didn’t take me long to find it as he made his way back to her bedside. His shirt stretched taut over the outline of the gun tucked into the small of his back under his pulled-out shirt.

So, the sonofabitch was going to play bodyguard.

For some reason, that didn’t sit right with me.

No, for some reason, I didn’t like that at all.

“Your shadows?” I murmured.

He met my gaze. Something dangerous shifted in his eyes. “Will be right outside the door.”

I just gave him a nod. “I’m sending over Pavlov.”

He scowled and opened his mouth to protest. But I was already turning and giving Leila a careful nod. “It’s already done, Kilpatrick. No need to get all gushy.”

“Asshole,” He muttered under his breath as he grinned.

“Exactly, brother,” I agreed as I headed for the door. “Exactly.”

I grabbed my phone and sent a text to Max, giving the instruction for Pavlov to provide extra security to Kilpatrick and the blonde billionaire heiress, and headed along the corridor once more. There was one more thing I wanted while I was here. One more thing that needed a special set of skills. As I turned right and headed for the control room, Anna’s words from yesterday surfaced.

I pressed the code and unlocked the door before stepping inside. My boots resounded in the gloom as I made my way back to the operator. It was the same male as I'd encountered yesterday.
