“Fuck me,” the Commander muttered, and turned his head to his security guards. “Take him to the goddamn infirmary. I want the bastard watched, no fucking phone calls, noanythinguntil I say.”

The bigger of the guards gave a nod, then turned his attention to Lazarus.

But Lazarus’s men were at his sides, and no one was passing…not until Rossi gave the order.

“I want to end you,” Lazarus snarled, clenching a fist. “I want to fucking beat you until I’m the last fucking thing you ever see, then I want to dump you in the water, still alive…and watch the goddamn sharks feed.”

A shiver raced along my spine at the words. “And I’ll be right there,” I added. “Watching every goddamn second.”

“No,” Kat whispered, and slowly shook her head. “Let him live. Lazarus…”

Rossi’s first son turned toward her. “Yeah?”

She licked her lips and slid her hand from Anna’s, commanding with a stony look, “Get me out of here.”

I’d never seen anyone command Lazarus like she did. In an instant, his focus wasn’t on the mutilated almost-dead man at his feet, but on her.He cast a last glance at Damon and turned toward her, taking two strides until he crouched at her side where she still huddled against the sofa.

One of his men moved to help. “Don’t fucking touch her,” Lazarus snapped, stopping the bodyguard cold.

With deliberate, gentle movements, he slid one hand under her knees and circled her torso with the other. “Hold on…hold on to me,” he urged, and grimaced.

The male looked awkward and way out of his fucking depth as he lifted Kat and angled her against his chest. But there wasn’t a damn word spoken as he strode across the apartment and headed for the elevator. His men were right there with him, half a step away. One stabbed the button for the elevator, then tugged off his jacket and draped it over her as the doors opened.

I turned my focus to Anna, but she was already moving, shoving up from the floor and gripping her torn shirt closed. No, nothershirt, myshirt, the one I'd wanted her to have. Her damn legs shook as she stepped forward, coming face to face with the Commander, and stared him in the eyes. “She gets seen by the doctor before that piece of shit.”

“His injuries—“ the Albanian started.

Then she curled her lip, baring her teeth. “Think very hard about your next words, Commander.”

Fuck. Me.

A shiver raced along my skin. This was no quiet nobody, no regular millionaire heiress, either. Iknewwho she really was—the most skilled money launderer we ever knew of, brilliant, not just in her ability to navigate the US Treasury but to outsmart, and outplay every other two-bit hacker who had tried to take us down—and so did the Commander.

He stilled, those careful eyes boring into hers before he gave a small nod. “Taking into account the severity—”

Anna didn’t even wait for him to finish his sentence. Instead, she glanced toward where the island’s security guards stood over the whimpering piece of shit.

“I’m going to fuckingend you!”Damon howled as the guards lifted him to his feet. “I’ll bury you, I’ll bury you so goddamn deep. I’ll use every penny I have to do it if I have to.” He wobbled with rage, clawing hold of the guards as Anna stepped closer. “You…youfuckingbitch.”

She just stood in front of him, all five-foot-five of her, and lifted her gaze to his. “Imagine you woke up one day and all your money was gone…poof, just like that.”

He paled, but it did nothing to ease the pure hatred in his gaze. “That’snevergoing to happen.”

She just gave a smile, one that was savagely malicious…and filled with dogged determination. “Never say never, asshole.”

They carried him toward the elevator, each step filled with whimpering, threats, and howls of pain. I just stood there, not really knowing what to say. “I came to rescue you.”

She waited for the Commander to leave and glanced at Max before answering. “You did.”

I took a look around at the shoved aside sofa and blood splatter on the floor. “Wanna get out of here?”

She gave me a smile then, one that was fragile and sad…and the Anna I knew. “I thought you’d never ask.”

Anna

Finley looked at me like I was a stranger, glancing from me to Max and back again.
