“What thefuck!” Max roared, and charged, slamming into one guy and lifting him into the air. “She fucking betrayed us?Fin…she fucking betrayed us!”

Everything moved in slow motion as Anna’s dad tried to reach for her from the floor. “Anna, no…”

His hands were still cuffed, and his face was a bloody, swollen mess. He was badly hurt from fighting two men, trying to save his daughter. I saw it all now, every cruel connection as they slipped into place. She came here, not to be one of us. She came here to leave with the FBI.

But as I looked down, I saw that piece of shit was no fucking fed. The bastard smiled as Max let out a grunt behind me, then one assailant hit the floor and didn’t move. One down…one to go. After that, it’d all be over.

“Fin…” Anna whimpered. “I love you.”

Those words drove deeper and colder than anything I’d ever felt before.

That was no warm, comforting love.

That was cruel and inviting and controlling, all at the same time.

I love you. Those words rang inside my head as I grabbed the asshole's wrist and squeezed, putting everything into that aching desperation until thesnapof bone filled my ears. The bastard screamed, he bucked and thrashed under my grip as I twisted, lifted my legs, and clamped my thighs around his hips.

He'd killed Baldeon.

Killed my mother.

If he didn’t, then he knew who had.

Boom! The gunshot echoed in the space. Max was a blur, lunging toward me as I reached down and grabbed the knife. Steel met flesh as I hefted the knife and drove the blade into his throat, then shoved, cutting all the way until there was nothing but the hiss of air.

“Fin! HE KNEW WHO KILLED YOUR MOTHER!”Max roared as I kicked, shoving the bastard from me, and rose.

Agony ripped through my side. Agony and desperation, a noxious cocktail with only one way to explode…and that was her.My hand shook as I reached around to the back of my jeans.

Max dropped next to the bastard, grabbing him by the shirt. “Tell me who fucking sent you!Tell me who killed Cian Salvatore!”

That’s all he cared about…delivering the wrath of my father.

I could see it now, see it as plain as the spilled blood before me.

Loyalty raged in my bodyguard’s veins.

But it wasn’t loyalty to me.

It was to my father, and always would be.

It all came back to that bastard in the basement. The one we killed after they tried to take out Baldeon the first time. His screams still rang in my head.

You think they’d send someone who had any family left? You have no idea who these people are. They’re about to unleash a fucking shitstorm on your precious little island and you with it.

“It doesn’t matter,” I murmured, my words sounding hollow and strange. “Nothing else matters.”

I lifted my gaze and my hand at the same time. Max punched the assassin. “Tell me who sent you!”

But there was no more speaking, no more breath, no more life. No more of anything. I lifted my head. The whites of Anna's eyes glowed in the dimness. I guessed it was always going to come down to this…

My father or me.

Choose.

Max stiffened as I slid my finger against the trigger. My heart was in the driver's seat now, pushing me harder than my will ever could.

“Fin?” Max murmured and stilled.
