Teeth that glistened with blood as he roared with laughter. “You have NO FUCKING IDEA!”

I turned then, the thud of my boots ringing out in the dark as I strode past the sniper’s rifle and headed for the elevator once more. But that hard fist in the middle of my gut hadn’t eased. That twitch came again at the corner of my eye. This was basically over before it had barely begun and still I was left withnothing.

Thwack!

The shot was barely audible.

I wanted answers. I wanted blood. Did someone know the daughter of The Ghost was here?

How many would I have to kill?

As many as it took to keep her safe.

Salvatore sucks. Her whisper returned to my mind as the elevator doors opened. I lifted my thumb to my mouth, the gash opened by her shattered phone screen was deeper than I'd thought. Just like the memory of her face was deeper, reaching all the way into the depths of my hunger. Salvatore sucks alright. But we claimed what was ours to take.

Our footsteps rang out as we followed the guard pushing the luggage carrier a discrete five steps ahead. He was packing, that much I knew. I'd caught a glimpse of his gun two buildings back. I focused on that glint as Kat slowed beside me, and I matched her stride.

“So, Finley Salvatore,” she said carefully.

I winced inwardly.

“You two…you know?”

I jerked my gaze to hers. “Fin? No…definitely not.”

She just gave a shrug and lifted her hands in surrender. “Look, I’m the last one to judge. But he seemed pretty into you back there.”

Into me? No.

Maybe one time I'd thought we were friends.

But now…now after six months of not even a hello?

It was changed.

“No,” I repeated, and swallowed hard. “We aren’t a thing.”

“Cool,” she answered casually.

The way she said it made my body burn from the inside out. Him and someone like Kat? That made sense…a whole lot of sense. My breath caught with a sharp pang in the middle of my chest.Ugh, that’s all I needed, indigestion from all the damn stress.

My steps slowed as I glanced toward her. “If you guys want to…you know, if you want to get together or anything, it won’t be weird.”

Her smile gave little away. The burn in my chest grew. Who was I trying to kid? I rubbed the damn ache and kept on walking.

“I’m not like that, just so you know,” she answered finally. “The others, they’d take someone like Finley Salvatore in the blink of an eye and stab you in the back while they were doing it. But that shit…that’s not me.”

I exhaled hard, my heart not quite as battered and bruised.Okay…that’s good. Not that I was into him or anything.

“Anyway,” she continued and glanced my way. “I think we’re gonna be busy being buddies.”

“Buddies, huh?”

She gave me a killer smile. “Yep.”
