I swallowed hard as a roar cut through the hangar.“FIN!”

“Dad.” I stepped closer, the words spilling from my mouth. The more I spoke the more he looked at me like I was a stranger.

I was trying to save his life.

Trying to save mine, too.

“This is the only way.” I finished as the thunder of boots grew louder. “The way it has to be.”

Dad said nothing as flashlights cut through the darkness and into our eyes, and the Commission’s guards followed.

“Fin!” the Commander roared, his eyes wild as they scanned the room, then moved to Finley.

“I’m okay,” Fin answered. “We’re all okay.”

The Commander looked at me, then my dad, and jerked his gaze back to Fin.“What the fuck happened?”

Lies.

They consume us.

So does love.

I stood at the dock in the slanting rain and watched my dad leave for the second time since coming to the island. Only this time, he wasn’t roaring and raging, desperate to save me. This time, he didn’t look at me at all. Instead, he just sat there, defeated, while the yacht sailed away.

“Come on,” Fin murmured as he pulled me away. "It’s been a helluva night.”

The steel gray sky was brightening. But I couldn’t leave, not yet. Rain battered me as I stared, hoping he’d turn to look at me. But he didn’t, he just grew smaller…and smaller and smaller.

Until eventually I let Fin pull me away.

We made our way back to Fin's apartment building and stepped, dripping, into the foyer.

“Mr. Salvatore.” I jerked my gaze up at the voice and stared at two bodyguards I’d never seen before. “Ms. Eden.” One nodded my way in greeting.

I could only nod back.

Fin pulled me toward the elevator and we stepped inside, rising silently to the apartment.

I felt numb inside, aching with pain for my dad. I knew he didn’t understand, knew he didn’t like what’d happened. But there was no other way.

“I don’t know about you, but I need a hot shower and some sleep.” Fin left my side, striding toward the bedroom.

Leale hauled himself to his feet and padded slowly toward me. I dropped to my knees and hugged him tight. There was no other way,I told myself again. No other way that didn’t result in collateral damage.

I refused to be collateral damage.

Or anyone I loved.

Fin dragged his sodden shirt over his head, the wound in his side now bandaged and taped. It’d been chaos from the moment the Commander found us, bright lights, people everywhere, and questions asked over and over again. Fin finally took over, rubbing my arm when the words choked in the back of my throat.

He explained how my dad had been kidnapped, and the men who took him had tried to take me as well. He told them how he'd found out and raced to save me, with Max and Pavlov at his side.

He told them how his bodyguards had died saving his life.
