How devastated he was with the loss.

How they’d both been loyal right to the end.

The doctor came and checked us over, taking Fin back to the infirmary to stitch and bandage his wounds before he called his father. Dominic Salvatore took the news in stoic silence before asking to speak to the Commander.

Mateo Ristani, the Commander of Cosa Nostra Institute, confirmed everything Fin said, glancing my way as he repeated what had happened not once, but twice. By the time we were done…it was almost daylight again.

Now Dad was gone.

And I was here with Fin.

“Anna?” he called from the bedroom. “Are you coming?”

I turned to the bedroom, because to do anything else was hopeless.

I belonged to Finley Salvatore now…maybe I always had…

Anna

Months later…

The camera blinked above me,moving to scan my office for the hundredth time, distracting me. Watched, controlled. That was my life now. It was what it’d been like since coming back from the island six months ago. I tried to not look up. Tried to pretend not to notice how guarded I was. Instead, I grabbed my water and unscrewed the cap.

My eyes blurred. I squinted, the screen a haze of scrolling numbers as the program scanned the accounts. I’d worked harder than ever before after the Island, days, most nights. I tilted back the bottle, spying the camera with the movement, and swallowed.

I hated them…

Dominic Salvatore and the other members of the Commission.

Hated him more than ever. I hated his control, his power. I hated how he infected everyone and everything. But more than anything, I hated how he ruled his son…the man I’d fallen in love with.

Finley Salvatore.

I screwed the top back on my bottle and turned back to the scrolling accounts on the screen, wrestling with my damn heart. Footsteps thudded outside the locked door, drawing my focus.

The shadow neared, stopped, peering through the slits of glass in the door. I felt his gaze raking me, searching the room, making sure I was still here working away like a good fucking dog.

A nerve twitched in the corner of my eye as I set my gaze on the monitors, adjusting run times and expanding out to new parameters. I’d searched for Bitcoin accounts, finding ways to hide the billions of unwashed Salvatore money only to have it return squeaky clean.

The moment my father had come home bloody and desperate, telling me he’d found himself in trouble with the dangerous Mafia family, I knew I had to help. This was the only way I could. I knew the network, knew how to infiltrate the many servers. I’d spent my entire life watching my father create network after network, spending my nights hunkered behind my laptop, creating my own future…

Only for it to be traded for my father’s life.

Now I worked forthem.
