You making a play, brother?

Rossi’s words rang in my head. Was I making a play?

It sure felt like it.

I followed her, striding toward the office. She had her things and was shutting down her computer by the time I moved to the door, then stepped backwards, peeking along the hallway, almost hearing the heavy thud of steps. “Hurry, Anna.”

She snatched her jacket from the back of the chair and rounded the desk as that loudthud…thud…thudof boots became clear. But we were already out of there, closing the door behind us as Archer skirted the corner and lifted his gaze to us.

“Hey,” he called.

But I just yanked her office door closed and placed my hand on the small of her back, ushering her forward.

“Fin!” the guard called out.

But I never slowed, just kept striding, pushing her toward the front of the building. But there were guards waiting when we reached the front door, closing around us. I gripped her hand. “Stay with me, Princess.” And pulled her with me as I turned to the guard in front of me. “Get the fuck out of my way.”

His eyes widened as I reached behind my back and grabbed my Sig. “Put your hands on us and I’ll take that as a direct threat on my and my wife’s life.”

Anna jerked her gaze toward me. But I was done playing…on all goddamn fronts.

The guard never moved as I strode toward the door, pushing Anna out in front as it opened. I didn’t need to tell her to hurry. Her steps lengthened as she headed for the car. I released her hold, grabbed the keys, and hit the button, unlocking the door.

We were inside in a heartbeat. As I started the car and backed out, I caught Archer striding out of the door behind us, lifting his phone to his ear.

“Fin.”

I shoved the car into gear, never taking my eyes off the motherfucker behind us. I knew he was onto us, knew he wasn’t just watching Anna, but behind the scenes, he was the one hunting down the hard drive from the island.

One call was all it’d take, and I’d have Laz take the bastard out. He’d do it, too. I punched the accelerator, driving us through the gate and out onto the quiet stretch of road. But I wouldn’t make the call…

I’d do it my damn self.

I drove us along the isolated stretch of road back home and pulled into the gates. “Grab your things, jackets, jeans, hiking boots. We’re going camping.”

“Really?” She looked surprised.

“Really.” I pulled the Maserati around the rear of the house and pulled into the garage, parking it next to the Explorer.

I killed the engine and climbed out, waiting for Anna to head to the rear of the house before closing that side of the garage. A firm the Commander trusted had fit the house with security, and if he trusted them, then so did I. Still, I knew we were vulnerable, more now than ever.

Right on time, my phone started ringing as I followed Anna to the rear door and then inside. I didn’t need to glance at the display to know who it was. I grabbed the cell and answered. “Yeah?”

“You want to tell me what the fuck is going on?” my father snapped.

“I have this damn pulse in the back of my head.” I started nodding to Anna when she glanced my way.

The movement couldn’t be more obvious…hurry.

“You what?”

“A pulse. It’s more like a throbbing, really.” I made for my wardrobe, grabbed my back pack, and walked out, throwing it on the bed as Anna rushed around like a madwoman, kicking off her shoes and yanking her blouse from her body.

She was alive, more alive than I’d seen her in months.

“What the fuck does that have to do with you walking out and taking my property?”

That savage side of me rose in an instant, making me stop at the side of the bed. “See, that’s the problem. That’s why I can’t get rid of this damn throbbing in my head.” My voice was low and dangerous. “It’s fucking eating me up, the constant throb, throb, throb. It’s because it’s you…you and this fucking bullshit. You wantyourproperty, Father. Then you’re going to have to come through me to get it.”
