I hung up the call and tossed the cell to the bed like it was on fire.

But there was no movement in the room.

Anna stood there, her eyes wide, mouth open before she closed it carefully and spoke. “Finally…my Fin is back.”

That chokehold of terror released its grip around me as she took a step, closing the distance in a heartbeat to lunge. I grabbed her, pulling her against me as she wound her arms around my neck and kissed me.

The burn between us ignited like wildfire, unleashing her desire. She speared her fingers through my hair and kissed me, hard. I held her, smashing her cheek against mine. Fuck if she didn’t feel so damn good. But then she broke the kiss, her lips red and full.

“Are you staying?”

“Here?” I asked, confused.

“No.” She held my gaze. “Is this Fin going to stay?” She unwound her legs from around my waist and dropped her feet to the floor. “Because I’d say yes to this Fin if he asked me.”

Yes to this Fin…

The words hit me. I knew exactly what she was saying. I swallowed hard, searching her eyes. “Yes. I’m here to stay.”

She gave a nod, her eyes glinting with happiness. “Good. Now let’s get the fuck out of here.”

She left me, stepping away to find her clothes and shoes and everything else we’d bought to go hiking. I dressed in jeans, boots, and a t-shirt and warm jacket, leaving her to pack the rest of the bags as I went to the secure room in the house.

I punched in the code and waited for the locks to disengage before opening the door and walking in. Lights flickered and blinked on, revealing walls loaded with weapons. Enough to go to war, if I had to…and right now I was feeling like I had to.

I grabbed the guns, loaded them into a pack along with a heap of ammo, and left. But by the time I strode out of the house and headed to the open doors of the Explorer, Anna had already stowed our bags into the back and was hunting the shelves in the garage for our tent.

I made my way to her, finding cooking equipment and a cooler and tossed it all into the back. “Wait here, I’ll lock the house. Everything else we’ll get on the way.”

She gave a nod, moving to close the doors and climbing into the passenger seat of the car. I’d forgotten how strong she was, forgotten a lot of things it seemed—including myself.

I made my way through the house and was heading back out when my phone gave abeep.

Mateo: Call me.

I flinched with the command, sucked in a hard breath, and locked the door as I headed to the Explorer.

Anna looked my way, yanking her seatbelt across her, and stilled. “What is it?”

“Not sure,” I answered, starting the engine before hitting the Commander’s number.

“Here,” he answered a second later. He sounded rushed, heavy steps thudding in the background. “There’s been a development. Is Anna with you?”

“Here,” she said beside me as I shoved the four-wheel drive into gear and backed out of the garage, hitting the button.

“I don’t want you to freakin' out.”

I cut her a glance as the garage closed. My heart was already thundering as I shoved the car into gear and made for the front gate.

“Okay,” she said.

“They’ve found him.”

I jerked my gaze to Anna. She paled in an instant, turning deathly gray.

“So he’s on the run. I’ll have guys head his way to meet him. But he’s going to have to get himself to somewhere that’s safe enough for the pickup.”

She shook her head as the front gate closed. “He can’t do that. That’s not him. He’ll…”
