“But not impossible.” I sucked in a hard breath. “He wanted us to know.”

“Yes,” Mateo answered.

“Fuck.” I groaned.

If my father had the hard drive, then there was no way out of this. He’d watch the footage. He’d know exactly what had happened to Max that night in the hangar…and he’d know what I did to protect Anna. I looked to the cabin, listening to her laugh with Xael at the baby. “Then we go to war.”

Anna

I lifted my gaze from the perfect bundle of joy when they walked back in. Fin’s eyes were dark, darker than I’d ever seen them…that meant something was wrong. Lazarus moved to Kat, leaning down to kiss her first before touching his daughter’s cheek. Even Mateo went to Xael’s side, pulling her hard against him with a jerk. Her arms slid around his waist as she looked into his eyes.

This wasn’t good…

This wasn’t good at all.

I slowly rose as Fin moved toward me. He didn’t hug me, not like the others. No, he refused my gaze, searching the rooms of the cabin behind me instead. His avoidance sent a chill along my spine. “What is it?”

Mateo was silent. Lazarus looked to Fin, licked his lips, then muttered, “She deserves to know.”

“Know what?” I stepped closer, forcing Fin’s focus to me. “Knowwhat?”

“They found it,” he answered. “They found the hard drive.”

I rocked back on my heels. My mind frozen with denial. “That can’t…” I shook my head.

“They can,” Fin murmured, reaching for me.

I now understood the tortured look in his eyes. “Oh shit, it’s him, isn’t it?” I searched for the truth. “That sonovabitch.”

I knew…knew in an instant. Smutter’s sadistic smirk came back to me. He’d found the one thing he'd said he would. He’d beaten us…but… “How?” I glanced at Mateo. “I thought you said you had this handled?”

“I did,” he answered and winced.

“Obviously not well enough.” It was all I said.

This was not a time for‘you should’ve let me handle it like I said’moment. But he knew without me saying the words. I wanted to put trackers out there, wanted to flood the damn dark web for traces of anything associated with the island or that piece-of-shit delusional psychopath who came to the island to destroy us.

“So we’re going to get it back…or try to at least,” Lazarus said behind me.

I turned, glanced over my shoulder as Fin moved away, heading to the bedroom.

“Don’t worry.” Laz brushed his thumb down Kat’s cheek. “The Commander is staying here.”

I glanced at Mateo, but I said nothing as Finley strode back toward me, the bag of weapons strung over his shoulder.

“It’s okay,” he said, meeting my stare. “You’ll be safe.”

“Of course I will,” I answered. “Because I’m coming with you.”

He froze, then scowled. “That’s not happening.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. Now he was just pissing me off. “I’m not asking.”

“Anna, it’s dangerous—” Laz started and froze with Kat’s glare.

“You think she doesn’t know that?” Kat snapped, looking up at him.
